1. John MILLIGAN was born Say 1744 in Ireland.

According to the "Private Family Missal In Which Is Recorded Many Facts and Incidents of Private Interest By Sam Milligan, Greeneville, Tennessee, January 1, 1863" as published in East Tennessee Roots, Vol. VIII, No. 1, John Milligan "was a weaver by trade, who was born in Ireland and married there a woman named Ross. Their children: William, John, Thomas, James (born at sea), Polly, Sarah and Alexander. They moved to Pennsylvania, where his wife died. Then moved to near Lexington, Rockbridge County, VA, where he married a Forger. Two children were born in Virginia: Elizabeth and Samuel; then they moved to Greene County, TN, where Sarah and Rebecca were born."

Other versions of the Samuel Milligan memoir indicate John Milligan was from County Antrim. This compiler has not yet checked the original manuscript, so cannot comment on whether the more specific location of Antrim has any basis in fact.

This compiler has done initial research in Rockbridge County, VA and can find no evidence of this second marriage, nor of any family in the area with a surname remotely resembling "Forger." There was, however, a Milligan family in the area in the second half of the 18th century.

John's birth year is estimated from the marriage dates of his youngest children.

On 23 Aug 1790, in Greene Co., Tennessee, a Thomas MILIKIN was bondsman for the marriage of William REYNOLDS and Jane MILIKIN.

James was reportedly born at sea. This may be the James Milligan who married Deborah NEWMAN on 25 Apr 1786 in Greene Co., Tennessee. On 18 Sep 1792, also in Greene Co., a James MILIKEN married Jane BEARD.
