The Trip to Grandma's House
We lived on the outskirts of town, probably about
ten miles from Grandma's house. In winter the old 1928 Ford did not
start for our Sunday visit to Grandma. Momma wrapped the two babies on
the toboggan and it was pulled by Daddy. Momma and the other four of us
followed behind as we travelled down the road on that crispy winter's day.
The exciting and scarey part of the trip was the climb up and over the
footbridge that crossed over the railway yard. There were two hundred
steps up--a long climb for little legs. Once on top we could see
the whole world.
Most terrifying and exciting was when and old
coal engine would pass under us. We would stand over the path of
the smoke stack of the train and get showered with hot cinders.
From the top of the world we could see Grandma
waving to us from her house.
