My Trip to Rice's Drug Store

Written as a letter by Bill Hodgson, July 2000 HODBILL@aol.com
During the war years , perhaps about 1943 when I was fifteen years old I worked part-time after school for Crown Paint and Paper Company at 101 Main Street. I was the "clean-up" boy, handyman, sales clerk and occasionally was allowed to make deliveries in the company panel truck , a 1935 Dodge, even though I was not yet old enough to have a valid driver's license. The business was run by two partners, Leon Graves and Burdell Kemp. One day, Mister Graves gave me some change and asked me to go up to Rice's drug store, and buy a pound of horehound candy for him. I couldn't believe my ears! What was "horehound" candy? Sounded like a bad word to me! I took the change, went up to Rice's, and saw the clerk, a pretty young girl about my own age. WELL! A boy of fifteen couldn't very well ask a lovely young lady for horehound candy, that would be too embarrassing! So, I went back to Mister Graves and LIED! I told him that Rice's was out of horehound candy! He finally went up to Rice's himself, bought what he wanted, and was discreet enough at the time to not let on that he had done so. I can't help but think that he must have had the greatest laugh of the week! I did notice that Mister Kemp kept looking at me, and would snicker under his breath throughout the rest of the day. What memories! Do you have any memories?
