WOOSTER -- Howard W. Martin, a long-time dairy farmer in southern Wayne County, died on Feb. 9, 2009, at West View Manor assisted living facility in Wooster at the age of 81. He was a victim of pancreatic cancer.
Mr. Martin was born June 22, 1927, to Willis and Marybelle (Ware) Martin on their dairy farm in Salt Creek Township near Fredericksburg.
He was a 1945 graduate of Fredericksburg High School.
He served in the United States Army from 1945-47.
Mr. Martin married the former Esther Roush of Orrville on May 9, 1948. They established their dairy farm operation in Franklin Township just north of Fredericksburg. They farmed and maintained a dairy herd at that location until he retired in 1995.
Mr. Martin was active in the Wayne County Farm Bureau. In the 1970s and 1980s, he served on its Board of Directors and as its president. He was also on the board and served as president of the Farm Bureau's commercial affiliate, Wayne County Landmark. He and his wife had been members at various times of several local Farm Bureau Advisory Councils in Wayne County. He had also been president and a board member of the Wayne County Soil Conservation District. He had been an active member of Fredericksburg and East Union Granges, and was a founding member and past president of Fredericksburg Ruritan Club. He was also an avid euchre player.
Mr. Martin was a member of Moreland United Methodist Church, and enjoyed singing in the church choir.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Esther Roush Martin; a sister, Ruth Martin Brown of Fredericksburg; and a brother, Roger Martin of Wooster. Surviving descendants include sons, Don and his wife, Tammy of Falls Church, Va.; Craig and his wife, Christy of Cumberland, Md.; and daughter, Deborah of Ashford, Middlesex, England. Six grandchildren survive, Ian Martin, Colin Martin, Jessica Martin, Jamie Martin Greene, Claire Thomson and Katherine Thomson. Jamie and her husband, David Greene, are parents of great-grandson Samuel Greene.
Predeceasing Mr. Martin were his parents, Willis and Marybelle Martin; sister, Norma Martin Brown; and brother, Duane Martin.
A private family funeral is planned with internment at Eastside Cemetery in Fredericksburg.
A public memorial service will be held at Moreland United Methodist Church on Feb. 21, at 11 a.m.
