ORRVILLE -- John W. Madding, 79, 2005 Paradise Road, died Sunday, July 5, 2009, at Green Meadows Health & Wellness Center in Louisville, after a seven-month period of declining health.
John was born Jan. 5, 1930, in Hornbeak, Tenn., the son of Samuel and Martha (White) Madding. He was united in marriage to Vera Werntz on Feb. 8, 1958, near Mount Vernon. She died Aug. 29, 2000.
He served as a sergeant in Korea during the Korean War with the U.S. Army, and following his discharge from the Army, had attended the University of Tennessee in Martin, Tenn., where he lettered three years in basketball and graduated with a bachelor's degree in agriculture.
He was employed as a food inspector for the United States Department of Agriculture at the J.M. Smucker Co. in Orrville, for 25 years, retiring in 1989.
He was a member of Marshallville United Methodist Church and Orrville American Legion. He was also a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, where he served as vice president until his recent illness.
John was an avid golfer, bowler, and enjoyed attending his grandchildren's activities.
Surviving are children, Linda (Darrick) Phillips of Wooster, Janell (Bob) Gillespie of Seville, Randy (Diane) Weber of Brunswick and John (Cindy) Madding of Marshallville; grandchildren, Amy Weber, Melissa Armstrong, Brooke Madding, Natalie Phillips, John Connor Madding III and Karly Madding; a great-grandchild, James Lehman III; a brother, William "Jerry" Madding of Hornbeak, Tenn.; sisters, Jean Easterwood of Reidsville, N.C., and Ruth Glover of Whitehaven, Miss.; and many special family members and friends.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; grandchildren, Sarah Weber and Abbey Phillips; and an infant brother.
Services will be held at Marshallville United Methodist Church on Thursday, July 9, at 11 a.m., with pastor Kenneth A. Moody-Arndt officiating. Burial will be in Wooster Cemetery at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday.

MADDING SERVICES
Services for John W. Madding, 79, Orrville, were held Thursday morning. Pallbearers were Darrick Phillips, Bob Gillespie, John Connor Madding III, Larry Myers, Tim McGuire and Johnathon McGuire.
