MOUNT VERNON -- Roman Majerczak, 83, of Briar Wood Drive, Mount Vernon, formerly of Wooster and Alpine Lake in Terra Alta, W.Va., passed away Tuesday, April 14, 2009, at Knox Community Hospital in Mount Vernon.
He was born March 11, 1926, in Cleveland, to the late Jacob and Rose (Glutz) Majerczak. Roman served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was wounded while serving in Iwo Jima and received the Purple Heart and the Silver Star.
Roman earned a bachelor of science degree in education from Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware and a masters degree in education from Western Reserve University in Cleveland.
He retired in 1988 after 35 years of teaching in the Wooster City School system, and coached football for 54 years. His 1960 team remains the only undefeated team in Wooster High School history. He also coached wrestling and served as athletic director for 21 years at Wooster High School. He is a member of the Wooster High School Hall of Fame and the Ohio High School Football Coaches Hall of Fame.
Roman was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Mount Vernon. For 21 years, he served as a summer camp counselor at Red Raider Camp in Geauga County and loved spending time doing outdoor activities such as camping and hiking. He volunteered as a reader for elementary schools and generously donated to those in need.
Surviving are his beloved wife of 55 years, Rosella (Schweizer) Majerczak; a son, Bill Majerczak of Watsonville, Calif., and a daughter, Doris Majerczak of Mount Vernon; grandchildren, Jacob and Joshua Majerczak; a brother, Mike (Marilyn) Major of Dothan, Ala.; and a sister, Olga (Gus) Coniglio of Westlake.
Memorial services will be Saturday, May 2, at 11 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Wooster. A luncheon at the church will follow the memorial service. Burial with military honors will be in Sherwood Memorial Gardens, Wooster.
An additional memorial service will be Sunday, July 12, at 4 p.m. at Alpine Lake boathouse. The Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home, 201 Newark Road, Mount Vernon 43050, is honored to serve the family of Roman Majerczak.
