RITTMAN -- Ulys G. Gunnels, 81, of Rittman, died Saturday, Feb. 24, 2007, at his home.

He was born Feb. 13, 1926, in Prichard, W.Va., to William H. and Martha (Saunders) Gunnels and lived most of his life in Rittman. He was a retired police sergeant from Rittman Police Department, where he was employed for 25 years and formerly had worked for the Barefoot Sole Co.

He attended Ambassador Baptist Church in Wadsworth and was a member of Wadsworth Masonic Lodge 385 F&AM. He was also a member of Scottish Rite Valley of Canton and Fraternal Order of Police Lodge.

He enjoyed boating, fishing and was a ham radio operator. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving in the American and Pacific Theater's of Operations.

Surviving are his wife, Georgie (Parsons) Gunnels; daughters, Shirley Ann (Boyd) Wellman of Wadsworth, Barbara (Allen) Bell of Naples, Fla., and Charlotte (Zane) Geitgey of Smithville; a foster daughter, Melinda Riddle of Naples, Fla.; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; brothers, Arnold (Erica) Gunnels of Smithville and George (Wilma) Gunnels of West Salem; sisters, Lillie Mae Hayes of Ashland, Ky., and Juanita (Billy) Dheel of Rittman; stepsons, Steve Losh of Houston, Texas, Stanley Losh of Mogadore, Timothy and Thomas Losh, both of Akron; and a stepdaughter, Sharon Lamson of Rittman.

His first wife, Anna Lee Gunnels, died May 7, 1999. A granddaughter, Brenda Jean, also died previously.

Services will be Tuesday, Feb. 27, at 11 a.m. at Gillman Funeral Home, 360 W. Sunset Drive, Rittman, with the Rev. Michael R. Decker officiating. Burial will be at Rittman Cemetery.
