WOOSTER - William James Newberry, 84, 2447 Wetherington Lane, died Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2003, at West View Manor.

Services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Roberts Funeral Home, Sherwood Chapel, Wooster, with the Rev. James L. Collier officiating. Burial will be at Sherwood Memorial Gardens, where military rites will be held.

Friends may call one hour prior to the services.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Wayne County, 2525 Back Orrville Road, Wooster 44691.

He was born Oct. 22, 1919, in Creston to Edward and Mabel (Dowd) Newberry and married Dorothy Riggs on March 26, 1943. She died in 1998.

He attended Case Western University and was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, serving as a P-38 Fighter Pilot. He had completed 50 missions over North Africa, Sicily and Italy.

For many years he worked for Dow Chemical, retiring in the mid-1980s, and was a member of First Presbyterian Church. He enjoyed golfing and playing tennis.

He will be missed by his children, William M. (Kay) Newberry of DeWitt, Mich., and Betty (Eugene) Howell of Wooster; a daughter-in-law, Karen Newberry of Wooster; grandchildren, Billy (Beth) Newberry, Ed (Becky) Newberry, Kyle and Kristi Newberry, Tracee (Chris) Wairer, Kim (Anthony) Rettig, Lindsey, Jennifer and James Howell; and great-grandchildren, Jake and Olivia Newberry and Jack and Samantha Wairer.

In addition to his wife, a son, James “Stoney” Newberry, died previously.
