Mystery Leedoms from other researchers.....
- Calbert Harry Leedom
My grandfather, Calbert Harry Leedom, was born Oct 2, 1896 in Dickinson, North Dakota (a far as I
can tell). The newspaper said he came to St. Paul MN from Dickinson, but I guess he could have been born somewhere else. He married my Grandmother Elsie Marie Kraft on July 2, 1920. He was working for the St. Paul MN Police Department when he died on June 20, 1926.
According to the paper he had moved to St. Paul from Dickinson 20 years earlier. I don't believe he ever lived with his mother or father in St. Paul, he lived with the Ericksons (not sure about the spelling). We always referred to them as Grandma and Grandpa but I don't know if they were even related. He was a carpenter and that is all I know about them. I guess I will have to see if Mom remembers more, she has never said anything much about them. Maybe they were his mothers parents, just a wild guess.
I have his death certificate and it lists father as unknown Leedom and Mother as unknown. It is so sad. I also have their marriage certificate but that does not give me any more info. This is all I know and it's not much. There has to be something somewhere.

- Martin Henry Leedom
I have very little on the Leedom family--here is what little I have. My Leedoms (at least what I know about them) are from Lafayette, MO
John Snider b. 2/22/1796 place unknown m. Sarah Snider b. 4/5/1802. Dau. Estaline Virginia Snider b. 8/29/1847, d. 5/30/1908 m. Martin Henry Leedom, b. 7/13/1840 d. 12/17/1904. Their children:
John Lee Leedom b. 3/5/1866
Minnie A. Leedom b. 7/10/1874 m. Golladay d. 4/8/1927
Dora Geneva Leedom (my ggrandmother) b. 9/3/1875 Lafayette MO. m. Matthew S. Winfrey d. 9/3/1965 in Kansas City, MO
Joseph G. Leedom b. 6/18/1877 d. 3/17/1880
Others mentioned are Sallie S. Cockrellmas b. 1857 and Mary J. Cockrellmas b. 12/22/1875--don't know who they are or connection; Sarah S. b. 1854 is also mentioned in family history --(this was given to me by my father--not certain of exact source but do have pictures of Martin Henry Leedom and Estaline Virginia Snider Leedom, Dora G. Leedom Winfrey.) Hazel Vern Winfrey Kennedy was one of 2 children of Matthew S. Winfrey and Dora G. Leedom Winfrey. Dorothy Lucille Kennedy Stricker was only daughter of Roy A. Kennedy and Hazel V. Winfrey Kennedy.
Know only that Dora G. was born in Lafayette County MO--not sure of other birth locations or where the Leedom family actually lived in MO--any information would be appreciated.

I have found more information about Martin Henry Leedom. He was b. July 13, 1840 (or one source says 1842) the first source says Columbus Ohio, the second says Lexington, Fayette Co. KY. According to his partial obit, he had been in KY, OH, and MO. He was a private in the Confederate Army in the 5th Missouri Cav, Co. H. He enlisted in Lafayette Co. MO, although his papers indicate he was from Carroll Co. I have recently acquired copies of his military records. He was captured and wounded in October 1864 and was in prison in Kansas City, Mo. He was released in April 1865.
He married Ellen Harier and they had one (?) child, John Lee Leedom b. 1866. I believe John was born in Carroll Co. and I do not know what happened to Ellen. In 1873, he married Estaline Virginia Snider. They had 3 children. In 1892, he purchased land in Howell Co. MO. and passed away there in 1904. Estaline passed away in 1908. I still do not have his parents names, but when I did the research at the National Archives on his military records, there were other Leedoms in the same unit. Unfortunately, I did not have enough time to copy those records. There is a partial obit--will try to find the source of it, as well as a written piece about an incident at the post office and he was the assistant to the post master. It is interesting that there are some Leedoms listed in Ohio at post masters.
You may want to post this to the website also--thought I would send it directly to you. I am interested in getting in touch with anyone who is descended from either of Martin H. Leedom's families.

- Sarah Leedom
I would like any information about Sarah Leedom who married James Hockenberry 10 Feb 1820 in Wayne County, Ohio. She may be the mother of my great-grandfather McKelvy Hockenberry, born 13 Nov 1830 in Holmes County, Ohio. James married again in December 1832 so either Sarah died or they were divorced by then.

Comments: Joanne and I both suspect, because of the early marriage date in Ohio, that Sarah Leedom may be one of the five daughters of John and Isabela Leedom.
- brother Ernest Harry and Roy Leedom
Kathryn, I am helping a friend with her LEEDOM line. She has told me that her grandfather was Earnest Harry LEEDOM born in 1894 (place unknown). He had a brother Roy, date of birth unknown, though suspected to be two years apart in age. Their father was Charles LEEDOM and their mother was Della BELKNAP.
Apparently Charles and Della died when the boys were small. She has a photo of Charles taken in Osklaloosa (sp?), Iowa and he looks to be about 25 years old. Earnest and Roy were orphaned and ended up in an orphanage (name unknown) in Chicago, IL. She says that the boys "ran away from the orphanage".
I can get no handle on these people. I have searched the 1900 Soundex for Illinois and Iowa but have not found them. Roy LEEDOM had the Leedom Photo Shop, 123 Shoeshone Street North, Twin Falls, Idaho.
Does anyone have anything on this family. Thanks so much.

More information - update 18-Apr 1999
I just received the Social Security information on Roy Charles LEEDOM. He was born 16 December 1897 in Des Moines, Iowa, the son of Charles and Della BELKNAP LEEDOM. I just found his marriage to Gladys GREENLY in Lincoln County, Idaho on 5 April 1926 via the Western States Marriage Record Index on the Internet.
I also found a marriage of Roy Charles Leedom to Velma Belle Bassford in Twin Falls Co., Idaho on 19 April 1919. I suspect he may have been married twice.
I am still searching for birth information for Roy's brother Earnest Harry LEEDOM, born 1894 (place unknown) and died 12 February 1938 according to the death records of Cook County, IL.
I am still searching for someone who might be connected to this family. You may post this on your query page. Thanks.

- Thomas Leedom
I just stumbled across your Leedom family references a few days ago, via Gendex.com. Cool! My mom was a Leedom, and we seem to be a missing sheep in the Leedom genealogy.
My G-G-grandfather, Thomas Leedom/Leathum/Lethum, born in the 1810's, moved from Stouch[s]burg, PA (straddling the Lebanon/Berks Co. line) after his wife (Leah Witman, b. 1816) died, ca. 1850, and landed in Hollidaysburg, where he promptly died of typhoid, orphaning his three children. Thomas appears to have had a brother, prob. Samuel, who lived in Lebanon borough in 1840, and in whose household at that time lived a 60-69 year old man and woman (Thomas and Samuel's parents?). (By the way, Thomas and Samuel appear in the 1840 PA Census returns as Leadum, although at least one of them is listed incorrectly in the Census Index as 'Leadwin'.)
Does anyone have any information on Lebanon County or Blair County Leedoms from the mid-1800s? There seem to have been some Leedoms from Leb. Co. who served in the Civil War, and I'm interested in whether any of them might be related, or preserved traces of my GGgrandfather, Thomas.
Thanks again for the Leedom info,

Comments: Daniel sent some detailed biographical information on Thomas Leedom and his son, Levi.
