Biography
JOSHUA HUMPHREY, long an eminent Naval Constructor in the service of the Republic, was a native of Chester (now Delaware) county. He furnished the following brief notice of his family connections, and of his own career. EDWARD HUMPHREYS, son of Daniel Humphreys and Hannah his wife, was born in Haverford township, (then Chester county,) about the year 1710, and died January 1, 1776, at his house in the same place. His father came from Wales, in the year 1682, and settled in Haverford. He married the youngest daughter of Dr. Thomas Wynne, who came from North Wales, was a man highly esteemed for Professional knowledge and urbanity, and was a leading member of the Society of 'Friends.'Edward Humphreys learnt the Fulling and Dyeing business, of his father, and kept that business going as long as he lived. His education was plain, but he was a man of strong and searching mind. He turned his attention to physic and surgery, and became eminent in both, - was sent for, far and near; in setting a bone no surgeon exceeded him. His services were seldom remunerated; the poor, he always attended gratis. He was a man of strong mechanical mind, and greatly esteemed by all who knew him. He was an active and useful member of the Society of 'Friends.' CHARLES HUMPHREYS, the brother of Edward, was born in Haverford, about the year 1712, and was brought up in the religious principles of his forefathers. He learnt the business of a miller, and possessed the mills bequeathed to himself and his brother Joshua, by their father, which yet remain in the family. Charles was a man of the greatest influence in the county, and was very useful in settling differences between his neighbors. - He was chosen a member of Assembly in 1763, and was continued a member of that body until 1775, when he and John Morton where chosen to the Continental Congress, for Chester county. He voted against the Declaration of Independence, - which vote he then thought was in unison with the sentiment of Pennsylvania, (but discovered afterward, that he had made a mistake.) Although he took no part in favor of the Revolution, neither did he by any act or deed oppose it. He died at his residence in Haverford, January 18, 1786. JOSHUA HUMPHREY adds, concerning himself: 'My father removed to the city in 1758, when I was very young. Soon after I came of age, I was fully engaged in building and equipping ships of war, in the Revolution, for the United States, as long as they had a ship; and in Washington and Adams' Administrations, I was fully engaged in constructing the six Frigates, ordered by Congress and in building the Frigate United States; and I did not return to my native place, until 1812; which, in a great degree deprived me of the opportunity to know more of the prominent characters of this county, - a county which has produced more eminent characters than any other county in Pennsylvania.' CASUALTY. - During the firing of a salute in Chester, on the 18th inst., in the celebration of the victory achieved by our brave volunteers at Fort Donelson, owing to the premature discharge of a cannon, a young man named John Steele, was quite severely, but not fatally injured, his escape partaking of the miraculous. He was engaged in ramming the cartridge, and the accident is attributable to that fruitful source of such casualties, insufficient sponging after the discharge of the piece, leaving a spark in the chamber to prematurely explode the cartridges. No permanent injury to the wounded man is anticipated.

ACCIDENT
Father and Son Drowned.- On Saturday last, Clement Steele and his son, a young man about 16 years of age, of Franklin township, Chester county, in company with several other gentlemen, went to the Christine, near Wilmington, Delaware, to fish. While there, young Steele went into the water, and whether from cramp or not, he went under. The father hastened to his assistance, but he also sank, and before aid could reach them, both father and son were drowned. Two gentlemen who endeavored to save the unfortunate ones came very near getting drowned themselves. A correspondent says: On Saturday, Mr. Clemson Steele, a farmer of Franklin township, Chester county, his son William, a young man of about 17 years of age, and several of the neighbors, formed a party for a dayfishing in Christian Creek. During the day, William Steele, in managing the net near Christian Village, Delaware, suddenly slipped into a hole beyond his depth, and not being able to swim sank to the bottom, when his father plunged in to save him, but he too being unable to swim, also sank. Two others of the party came near meeting the same fate in attempting to rescue the father and son, but came out safely. As soon as possible, grappling irons were thrown in and the bodies dragged on shore. The son was already dead, and the father expired a few moments after reaching shore. Mr. Steele leaves a wife and family to mourn his untimely end. The bodies were taken to their home - from which they set out only a few hours before in perfect health and strength. The scene which took place at that desolate home, as the widowed wife and mother looked upon the pale faces of her husband and son who went out from her in the morning, in the full vigor of manhood, but now cold in death, is impossible to describe.
