At the start, I had very few references to my particular Bond family in Philadelphia during the mid 1700s. My father's hand-lettered chart shows only Joseph Bond marrying Esther Jeanes on 27 Oct 1750. A record of that marriage and that of one of their daughters are in "Record of Pennsylvania Marriages Prior to 1810, Volume 1, Marriage Record of the German Reformed Church, at Philadelphia, 1748 - 1802":
1750, Oct. 27: Bond, Joseph and Esther Jenes
1786, May 16: Bond, Mary and Lewis Hansal
During a research trip to Philadelphia my husband and I visited the Swarthmore Friends Library on the college campus. There I found a paper in a Jeanes family file listing the children of Joseph Bond and Esther Jeanes. It was noted as having been prepared by Augusta Isham Thomas Hicks of Piqua OH on 18 Feb 1899. Now I had nine children, some with spouses and dates. I posted what I had and hoped someone would see it and be able to verify and add to my limited information.
Details about two of the children of Joseph Bond and Esther Jeanes, Joseph and Esther, were soon sent to me by Jay Willis of Berks Co PA. The same nine children and spouses were supported by Jay's information. Jay and I also connected through the Butler and Moore families of Chester Co and we found more shared family as we corresponded. His information is in family records from his great-aunt, Mary Emeline Willis (1880-1964), a descendant of Samuel Moore and Alice Butler. Copies of many of his family papers contained additional clues and dates and were fascinating reading as well. This was the first new family I'd found in this line and it was exciting to have connected with Jay.
One of the frustrations in researching Joseph Bond is a recurring statement in typed manuscripts as well as published genealogies. It is always unattributed and undocumented and most every instance is worded exactly as the others. The statement is that Joseph Bond is the son of Richard and Charity Bond. I have never seen more information than this nor, as I said, have I ever seen a hint of a source. I welcome any new information regarding Richard and Charity. But until some documentation is presented I believe the following Yorkshire parentage of Joseph Bond is more likely.
In 2001 I received a letter from Jonathan Schau, a descendant of Joseph Bond and Esther Jeanes through their son Joseph who married Esther Ellis. After a long and exciting correspondence I haven't heard from Jonathan in years but he provided a wealth of detail about the early Bond family in Yorkshire.
Citing sources from the Historical Society of Pennsylvania including the L. Gertrude Fryburg Collection, The Gilbert Cope Collection and records of the German Reformed Church of Philadelphia, Jonathan identified Joseph Bond as the son of Joseph Bond and Ann Shiers of Wrose, Bradford, Yorkshire ENG. This Joseph Bond was the son of James Bond and Ann Pool of the same parish in Yorkshire according to records of the births, deaths and marriages of Bradford Quaker Meeting in Yorkshire. Falls Monthly Meeting records in Bucks Co. PA provided by Jay, also a descendant of Joseph, son of Joseph Bond and Esther Ellis, give more details.
Philadelphia Monthly Meeting:
26 11mo, 1710 - A certificate on behalf of Joseph Bond and his wife from Brighouse MM in Yorkshire was read and approved
30 3mo, 1712 - Joseph Bond acquaints this meeting that he is about to remove to Bristol in Bucks County with his family and having brought a certificate from Great Britain desires one from this meeting on behalf of himself and his wife.
29 10mo, 1738 - A Testimony against Hannah Boyd (late Bond) being prepared...was read (Outgoing in Marriage). [possibly Hannah, d/o Joseph Bond and Ann Shiers?]
Falls Monthly Meeting
27 Jul 1712 - Certificate, Joseph Bond and Ann his wife. Monthly meeting at Bristol of Bucks Co.
3 Mar 1713 - Certificate for Joseph Bond from Friends at Philadelphia was read and approved.
9 Apr 1713 - Joseph Bond produced a certificate on the account of his brother in law, John Shires, which was read and ordered to be recorded which came from Yorkshire in old England.
While we weren't sure originally that the marriages of a James Bond to Sarah Booth and Ann Poole were the same James, this was also verified by Jonathan. He received a letter from Oliver Pickering of the University of Leeds with even more details of the family, some of which came from "The Society of Friends in Bradford" by H.R. Hodgson, published in 1926.
James Bond - d. 14 Feb 1722 Bradford, Yorkshire ENG; 1m. Apr 1665 Bradford MM Sarah Booth d. 30 Sep 1668 Bradford, Yorkshire ENG, 2m. Aug 1670 Bradford MM Ann Pool d. 25 Feb 1718
James Bond was of Boulton (or Bolton), parish of Calverley, between Leeds and Bradford. He 'suffered' as a Quaker: with 80 others, he was summoned to Quarter Sessions at Wetherby, January 1683, where he was indicted for absence from parish church; refused to deny the indictment; refused to take the oath of allegiance; and was committed to prison. Refused to be sworn as a constable, and fined, 1691. Fined also for refusing to pay tithes, 1707.
-- Oliver Pickering, University of Leeds, from "The Society of Friends in Bradford", in email to Jonathan Schau and thence to several of our family.James and Sarah Booth had one child:
- Elizabeth - b. 27 Sep 1668 Wrose, Bradford, Yorkshire ENG. Probably the Elizabeth Bond who married Abraham Grimshaw of Calverly in 1698. The Grimshaws also happen to be ancestors of Oliver Pickering.
James and Ann Pool had six children whose births are all recorded in the Bradford Quaker Meeting records:
- Robert - Oct 1670 Wrose, Bradford, Yorkshire ENG; m. 11 Apr 1694 Elizabeth Milton of Bradford
- Rachel - b. 28 Jun 1672 Wrose, Bradford, Yorkshire ENG; m. 8 Apr 1696 Timothy Linsey

- Hannah - b. 28 Mar 1704 Bradford, Yorkshire ENG
- Mary - b. 10 Apr 1677 Wrose, Bradford, Yorkshire ENG, d. 14 Jun 1760; m. 1707 Thomas Benson. Thomas Benson and Mary Bond are specifically named as the parents of Anne in the IGI record though the film, #6142796, is not named or described. I am listing the three children of Thomas and Mary to keep track of them.
- Tabitha - b. 28 Jul 1708 Gilderson, Balby, Yorkshire ENG
- Grace - b. 23 Jun 1715 Gilderson, Balby, Yorkshire ENG

- Richard - b. 10 Feb 1684 Wrose, Bradford, Yorkshire ENG

1. Elizabeth - d. bef 30 May 1805 Plymouth, Montgomery PA, m. aft 27 Nov 1771 Richard Sands d. bef 24 Jul 1800 Plymouth, Montgomery PA. Richard's identity was confirmed for me by Elda Bardsley, a descendant. There were two Sands families in Montgomery Co and Richard appears to have been of the less well documented one. His parentage is unknown at this time. Richard and Elizabeth Sands had nine children:
- Esther - b. 1772 d. 19 Dec 1853
- Richard - b. 1773 d. 1836 m. Jane ___

(A Thomas Ellis married a Sarah Stinson on 28 Mar 1765 according to Pennsylvania Marriages.) I haven't yet identified Esther Ellis' family though she was a sister to the Mary Ellis who married Joseph's brother, Isaac. Joseph and Esther Bond had eight children:
- Thomas - b. 19 Sep 1787 d. 10 Feb 1852; m. (probably) Laetitia, b. abt 1785 d. 1820. Laetitia as the name of Thomas' first wife is probable and though he also married again, his second wife's name is unknown. Thomas is listed in 1850 census Upper Delaware Ward of Philadelphia Co with two young women, Sarah (age 23) and Martha (age 18) Bond. Neither of these woman can be identified yet. Information on Thomas is from Jonathan Schau, descendant of Thomas' son Charles.

After Joseph's death in Feb Sarah resided with Ella L. Cline and her husband in 1870 Radnor, Delaware Co census listing. Her middle iniital is B in that listing. Ella was listed with Joseph and Sarah in 1860 but I do not know what relation, if any, she may have been to them.
- Jonathan - There is a Jonathan Bond listed in the transcribed record of burials at Merion Meeting Graveyard but no dates or ages are given. Sharing his grave is an unnamed child. Jonathan's grandfather Joseph is buried in this graveyard so it's possible but not proven that these records refer to this Jonathan Bond.
- Isaac
- Isaac
- Mary
- Thomas
6. Mary - m. 16 May 1786 German Reformed Church, Philadelphia PA Lewis Hansal. The first possible reference I've found is that a Mary Hansell died 4 Feb 1829 according to the Ladie's Literary Portfolio in PA Vital Records. There is both a Lewis Hansell and a Mary Hansell buried at Merion Friends Burial Ground in Montgomery but there are no dates listed for either and I do not know that they are this couple. The source - Records of Merion Graveyard, by Thomas Wynn and C.E. Hires, 1702-1808
As Lewis and Mary were married in the German Reformed Church they may have been buried in the church grounds of Lewis' family, wherever that may have been.

As I wrote above, Joseph and Isaac Bond married sisters, Esther and Mary Ellis, though I cannot connect them to any of the Ellis families in Chester Co as of yet. The will of a Jesse Ellis mentions "my niece, Esther Bond, wife of Joseph Bond". Jesse Ellis was a son of Margaret Ellis, the daughter of Humphrey Ellis and Jane David:
ELLIS, Jesse, will probated 29 Oct 1799, Haverford, Delaware Co:
To wife Hannah ELLIS, son in law John FREE and daughter Mary FREE, if no issue, heirs to be children of "niece Esther BOND wife of Joseph BOND"....Humphrey Ellis married Jane David before 1691. Two daughters are of interest to me:
- Rachel - b. 28 Apr 1691 Haverford, Bucks PA m. Godfrey Kirk 17 Nov 1724 Haverford Meeting
- Mary - b. 8 Feb 1700 m. William Kirk 9 Jun 1747 Haverford Meeting
I am interested in the Kirk family because of the marriage of my 5G aunt Elizabeth Leedom to a Kirk, probably Joseph, according to the will of her father, Samuel Leedom, written in Delaware Co PA in 1814.
Another Ellis connection: Rachel Ellis married James Steel, b. abt 1760 Philadelphia PA, son of Andrew Steel and Mary Massey. See my Steele family page for more on the family of this Rachel's husband.

Glenn Bond has an intriguing Bond family in Ontario. His 3G grandmother was Mary E. Bond who named her eldest son Isaac Joseph Bond, all given names in my Bond family. His family lore states that the Bonds were Loyalists during the Revolution and Quakers, originally from PA. Is emigration to Canada the reason for a lack of PA records for some of my Bond family?
