Butler & Moore families of PA

Easttown, Chester PA

My Butler family begins in the mid 18th century in Easttown, Chester Co PA with John Butler, husband of Hannah McCue. Little is known about John and consequently I have been unable to identify his parents. The only concrete date I have for him is the administration of his will to his wife:

BUTLER, John. Chester Co. January 20, 1785. Adm. to Hannah Butler.

There were several Butler families in the area at the time, as might be imagined. A John Butler is referenced in a Butler family association publication on the line of Noble Butler. This John Butler resided in Easttown Twp, was a shoemaker, and died in 1784. His will is noted to have been probated in 1785 but I have not yet found a copy of it. On 20 Jan 1785, administration of the estate of John Butler of Chester Co was given to Hannah Butler, according to Wills of Chester County, Pennsylvania 1778-1800. Unfortunately, no definite connection between my John Butler and the Noble Butler family had been ascertained at the time of publication.

It may be presumed that John was born about 1730 given that his wife Hannah McCue was born about that time. Hannah was the daughter of Samuel McCue and Ann Wayne and was probably born in Ireland. Hannah's mother, Ann Wayne, was the aunt of Gen. Anthony Wayne. Due to the fame of her family, there is some published information about the McCues though not enough to identify John Butler.

John Butler and Hannah McCue had six children, all probably born in Chester Co:

  1. Samuel Butler - b. bef 1760

  2. Elizabeth Butler - b. 1766 d. aft 1850; m. William Steele b. 1758 Easttown Twp, Chester PA d. bef 1850 prob Easttown Twp, Chester PA (see Steel family page for more on this line)

  3. Alice Butler - d. bef 1804; m. 12 May 1776 Swede's Church, Philadelphia PA Samuel Moore d. bef 7 May 1796 Radnor, Delaware PA. Alice is buried in Newtown Friends Burial Ground in Delaware Co. There is a Samuel Moore, d. 5 Mar 1794 with residence in Radnor, buried at Merion Friends Burial Ground though there is not enough information available to determine if he is this Samuel Moore or not.

  4. John Butler - b. bef 1760 d. aft 1823 prob Virginia; m. 7 Sep 1772 Swede's Church, Philadelphia PA Deborah Douglas. Under 21 in 1760 when mentioned in his uncle Samuel McCue's will. The information regarding John's marriage to Deborah Douglas and their move to Virginia is from Robert Wayne in correspondence with a McCue descendant currently living in TN.

  5. Hannah Butler - d. bef 1804; 1m. John Caldwell, 2m. John Rouse

  6. Jean Butler - d. bef 1804; m. James Carson. There is a James Carson enumerated in the 1790 census of Southwark, Philadelphia: Jas. Carson, 274 Second Street, schoolmaster, 1 male over sixteen including head of household. Because I know nothing about Jean Butler and James Carson's family, even their whereabouts, I do not know if this listing represents them or not.

While Elizabeth Butler is my 4G grandmother I have been looking at all her siblings in the hopes of finding information about her parents. For several years, I had had no correspondence with any descendant of any branch of this Butler family until Jay Willis of Bucks Co wrote me. He provided me with all his material on the family of John Butler Moore, son of Elizabeth's sister, Alice Butler and her husband Samuel Moore. We found the marriage of Alice to Samuel in the records of Swede's Church in Philadelphia where Alice is named as Else Butler. I have found nothing on the birth of either Alice or Samuel. That Alice died before 1804 is stated in a document detailing the distribution of her father's estate after a survey made in the spring of 1804.

Samuel and Alice had three known children:

  1. Hannah Moore - b. 1781 m. 8 Oct 1806 John McCallmont of Newport, New Castle DE

  2. John Butler Moore - b. 16 Apr 1793 Chester Co PA d. bef 26 May 1852 bur. Newtown Friends Burial Ground, m. 27 Jun 1823 at Van Leer Hotel Philadelphia to Mary Ann Key b. 26 May 1805 d. 8 Jan 1891, daughter of John Key and Esther Canby. John is buried at Newtown FBG while Mary Ann is buried at Fernwood Cemetery.

  3. Anselm Moore - m. Leah ___. Possibly ran a boarding school called "Old Erskine Place".
An Anselm Moore is listed in the 1810 census of Delaware Co. PA, p. 459, Upper Chichester Twp. Anselm Moore also listed in Pennsylvania Volunteers in the War of 1812. Also a marriage record of an Anselm Moore to Mary Hoopes, both of Chester Co, 7 Jan 1805, performed by Rev. David Jones, pastor of Southampton Baptist Church.

John Butler Moore was a teacher at several schools in the area, Wynnwood School, Cobb's Creek School (later known as Chestmont School) and Coopertown School, at the time of his death. In addition, he taught law and higher mathematics in Easttown, Swarthmore, Westtown and Haverford townships. Mary Ann Key is said in Jay's family to be a cousin of Francis Scott Key but neither of us has documented this connection as of yet. Jay has kindly given me copies of virtually all his family records of John and Mary. It has been wonderful to find such a generous member of this branch of my family.

John and Mary Ann were the parents of twelve children:

  1. Huldah Ann Moore - b. 29 Nov 1824 Delaware Co PA d. 5 Jun 1905 Dubuque Co IA; m. 13 Jun 1855 Delaware Co PA Joseph Rogers, son of William Rogers of Derby ENG. Details about Huldah Ann and her family are from family letters from Jay Willis and from a descendant, Daniel Ewer.

    1. Catherine - b. 1856 Delaware Co PA; m. ___ Lindsey

    2. Francis P. - b. 1859 Delaware Co PA, drowned 1876

    3. Henry Joseph - b. 19 Aug 1861 Farley, Dubuque IA d. 4 Dec 1941 Anoka, Anoka MN, bur. Forest Hill Cemetery, Anoka MN; m. 2 Jun 1908 Anoka, Anoka MN Loretta Philipina Smith b. 4 Feb 1884 Isanti Co MN d. 31 Dec 1921 Anoka, Anoka MN

    4. Rhoda Elma - b. 1864 d. bef 1929

    5. Augusta - d. bef 1929

  2. Hannah Elizabeth Moore - b. 10 Mar 1826 d. 14 Sep 1870 bur. Bethesda Methodist Cemetery, Haverford, Delaware PA; m. 1851 Talbert Touchstone. In the 1860 census records of Haverford, Delaware Co there is a listing for a William T. Tustan, age 36, born in Maryland. His wife is Hannah E., age 33 and born in PA. These would be the right ages for them to Talbert and Hannah, accepting the more phonetic spelling of the surname. Also listed is: Ella - age 8, George Washington - age 3, and Amanda - age 1. With them is 48 year old George Washington Tustan, born in Maryland, possibly a brother to William.

  3. John Andrew Jackson Moore - b. 29 Mar 1828 Willistown Twp, Chester PA d. 31 Oct 1900 Oakmont, Haverford, Delaware PA; m. Emeline Bonner Pawling b. 27 Aug 1830 d. 31 Dec 1912, daughter of Jesse Pawling and Elizabeth Harding (see Bond family page for Elizabeth Harding's family)

  7. Esther Ann Moore - b. 29 Aug 1836 d. 11 Jul 1876; m. Frederick Grant. They had four children: Emily, Howard, Susan and Augusta Grant.

  8. Mary Emily Moore - b. 3 Nov 1836 d. 3 Dec 1919; m. Harry Pyott. Three children: Laura, Augustus and Esther Key Pyott.

  9. William Steele Moore - b. 14 Dec 1840 d. Mar 1906 buried in a pauper's grave in Arizona

  10. Augustus Leedom Moore - b. 12 Oct 1842 d. 29 Nov 1864 Chattanooga, Hamilton TN, served in the 116th or 15th PA Cavalry, Company G, mustered in 3 Sep 1864. In 1860 PA census Haverford, Delaware Co, Augustus was living with Augustus Bond Leedom (my 2G grandfather, master miller) as an apprentice miller.

  11. Benjamin Franklin Moore - b. 20 Dec 1844 d. 11 Oct 1926; m. Annie Smitherman. In 1860, age 15, he is living with David K. Ralston family in Haverford Twp, Delaware Co. Three children: Morris, Leslie and Lillian Moore.
