The only thing my family knew about the Crowell branch of my family was that my great-grandfather's name was Robert Crowell. Much of what is presented here about the Crowell ancestors was provided to me by Linda Gail Komar, Tim Mattingly (family info available on website) and Betty Crowell, all Crowell family researchers. Linda contributes to the Crowell list on RootsWeb and publishes a quarterly newsletter. This is a compilation of material by them and other Crowell researchers. There is much to do on this side of the family.
I do not as yet have a record of the birth of my 5G grandfather Johan Michael Grauel, though it is believed he was born about 1683 in Germany. His wife Sybilla Elizabetha Fulman was bap. on 6 Feb 1704/05 in Heuchelheim, Pfalz, Germany.
Michael Grauel, his wife Sybilla, their five sons and Sybilla's parents, Jacob Fulman and Anna Barbara (Siegfried) Fulman, emigrated from Germany on the ship "Harle", leaving from Rotterdam and landing at Philadelphia on September 1, 1736. The passenger list of this ship is published in "Pennsylvania German Pioneers, a Publication of the Original Lists of Arrivals in the Port of Philadelphia From 1727 to 1808", by Ralph Beaver Strassburger, pub. 1980. Linda sent me copies of the book's passenger list signatures of my ancestors. They show various spellings of the surname in various places: Michel Kraul, Jacob Vellmann, Sibila Elisabeth Kraul, Anna Barbara Vollman, Johan Michel Graul, Jacob Follman, Jacob Fellman.
Michael Grauel and Sybilla Fulman settled in Berks Co PA. I do not know exactly where in Berks Co they lived nor do I know when they died. Four of their five sons, George, Jacob, Phillip and Johannes married and lived all their lives in Berks Co.

The third son, Heinrich, married Anna Margaretha Bader about 1750 and after having four children born there through 1760, moved to Frederick Co MD. Heinrich Grauel died sometime after 6 Sep 1784 when his will was written and before 2 Oct 1784 when it was entered into probate in Frederick Co MD. By that time he had changed his name to Henry Crowel. No record of the death of his wife Anna Margaretha has yet been found. Henry and Anna had seven children, the first four born in PA and the last three born in MD.

Henry Crowel, the fourth child of Henry and Anna, is shown on the 1850 census, 48th Dist, Pulaski VA as being 83 years old and born in Maryland. He married Rachel Smith sometime before 1787, the year of birth of the first of their ten children.
I know very little about Henry and Rachel's children, in most cases a name and year and place of birth. All of the first three, George, Joseph and Margaret were born in Frederick Co MD. By 1794 when the fourth child is believed to have been born, Henry and Rachel's home could have been either MD or VA, as I have no specific birth dates for any of the remaining six children. The two youngest children, Ann Maria and William, did marry in Wythe Co VA in 1834 and 1835. Various grandchildren of Henry and Rachel were found on the 1850 VA census records. The page listing Henry Crowell, their fifth child, is virtually unreadable.

After Rachel's death abt 1815, Henry Crowell married a second time, on 6 Jan 1819 in Botetourt Co VA, to Elizabeth Anderson. They were the parents of three children, Henry, Eliza and Susan Mary about whom I know nothing further.
Information on the Crowell marriages was found in Washington Co VA Marriages, 1853-1880 compiled by Thomas Colley. It was sent to me by Betty Crowell who is married to a great grandson of James Daly Crowell. Any of these researchers would appreciate additional information on these families.
Joseph Crowell, the second of Henry and Rachel's ten children and my 2G grandfather, was born in 1788 in Frederick Co MD. He married Mary Ann McLaughlin, whose maiden name is known thanks to Alice Lidholm, who found the reference in a book of pioneers of Routt Co CO. Alice is related to Joseph's eighth child, David Cloyd Crowell who moved to CO with his wife. Joseph and Mary Ann Crowell had 13 children.

From Alice Lidholm: "David was a pioneer of Craig, CO, moving there in 1883. David and Mary J. Hawthorne moved to Colorado in 1870, and lived in Denver, CO. where he was a fire fighter. In 1880 he was proprietor of the Frisco Hotel in Frisco, CO, and spent a short time in Leadville, CO before moving to a ranch in Routt Co. near Craig, in 1883. The book that I referred to was a history of the pioneers of Routt Co., CO (History of West Routt County Colorado, published by Curtis Media). and starts out, "David C. Crowell was born in Pulaski Co., Va on Mar 1, 1841. He was the son of Joseph and Mary McLaughlin Crowell. Joseph and Mary were native Virginians." From there it goes on to tell about his service in the Confederate army as a 1st lieutenant. He then married Mary J. Hawthorne on 6/28/1865. It then tells about their children, Mary, Walter and Laura."

Robert Craig Crowell married Sara Ann O'Dell on 28 May 1871 in Washington Co TN. I do not know when or why he moved to TN although an uncle of his, John, had apparently moved to Coffee Co TN where John is supposed to have died.
A short, rough draft of an autobiography typed by Robert's wife, Sara Ann, tells of their meeting and states that Robert Crowell ran off at the age of 14 to join the war. A Robert Crowell is listed as volunteering for active service in the 105th VA Militia, Davis' Co. An M.T. Crowell (Robert's brother, Madison T.?) is also listed as age 25, joining Rhea's Co. of the same 105th Militia. A Joseph Crowell (another brother?) is also shown on the roster of the 50th VA Infantry in Pulaski Co VA, along with Jeremiah, John and Robert Odell.
Robert and Sara had three children:
- Corinthia Ann - b.19 May 1875 d. 21 Jan 1917 Philadelphia PA; 1m. Alfred L___ , 2m. 6 Jul 1897 Greeneville TN George Corson Taggert, lived in Philadelphia PA
- Ida Virginia - b. 1881 d. Nov 1896 Greene Co TN
- Sara Alys - b. 29 Mar 1891 d. 22 Mar 1958 Bloomfield, Essex NJ; m. 6 Mar 1918 Laurie Moyes Leedom
Robert died in Jan 1897 and is buried next to his daughter Ida Virginia, whose death preceded his own by only two months. I have not yet found the specific cemetery they are buried in though it is about five miles from their home at the time, believed to be Limestone. His widow Sara Ann then moved to Philadelphia after her daughter Corinthia's marriage to George Taggert, a doctor in that city. Sara Ann O'Dell died 9 Aug 1915 in Philadelphia and Corinthia died less two years later. I have not yet found their burial places.
