Most of the initial information I had concerning the early duMez family was sent to me many years ago by Barbara Sample Schuler, a descendant of Antonie duMez (b.1830), brother of my 2G grandmother Janna or Jane duMez. Barbara very kindly sent me a wonderful reproduction of a tintype photo of Rachel deBack in her possession, complete with notations in Barbara's mother's hand. Barbara also sent me a copy of a history of the duMez family as researched by Belva duMez Bernard, granddaughter of Samuel duMez.

 

"Some time ago you ask for a sketch of the duMez families. As briefly as possible considering time period and number of people included here it is.

 

The duMez families were of small nobility in native homeland of France......It is understood our forefathers marched with Napoleon toward Moscow. Later as Huguenots or French Protestants, a brother fled to Switzerland while three other brothers fled to Flanders hence to Netherlands, Province of Zeeland.

 

These three brothers settled in or near the town of Nieuvliet, Province of Zeeland, Netherlands. I have record of Andries and wife Adrianna deGroot who were parents of nine children. It is known that one of their sons went to Brazil where he is supposed to have entered the coffee business. Since I started this genealogy I have united the descendants of their four sons who came to America from 1844 to 1854."

Recently I received an email from Dennis deGroot and in subsequent correspondence he most generously shared his very detailed research documents about the deGroot, Pattist and Wens families. Each of these families intersected with my duMez family and each paper added more detail.

 

The parents of my 5G grandfather, Adriaan duMez, still eluded me, however. I subsequently contacted Martin Wingelaar whose web site concentrates on the duMez family. There was one detail there that showed my Adriaan duMez married a second time. I asked for his source for this second marriage and he sent several pages of documentation written by a well-respected Dutch researcher, ???? van Oyen. Adriaan was specifically named as widower of Leintje Vervate at the time of his second marriage.

ISIS death record names his father as Antoin du Mez.

I do not have a specific record yet that Adriaan and Antoin are indeed the same person. He is referred to in several records at ISIS and GenLias as both Adriaan and Antoin:

Catrina Carels death record names him as Adrien duMez.

Two Netherlands ancestors websites state that Adriaan was the widower of Leijntje Vervate at the time of his marriage to Catrina Carels. I am in the process of obtaining documentation from the authors of these web sites.

14 February 1790 Adriaan du Mez, widower of Leijntje Vervate have remarried, with Catharina Karels, widow of van Cornelis van de Vijver and in the same year alhier its zoon remained Anthonie du Mez and Janna Hendriks, who moved around 1794 to Helenapolder [northeast of IJzendijke-KI].

 

Adriaan married Leijntje Vervate.⁵ Leijntje died before Feb 1790.

Original information about Anthonie from Barbara Sample Schuler gave Anthonie's birth year as 1776. She gave no marriage date for Anthonie and Janna Hendricks and I have so far not been able to find it recorded at GenLias. The record of his marriage to his second wife, Catharina Serle, in 1822 gives his age as 54 (therefore born about 1768) and gives the additional information that he was the widower of "Janna Henricks".

Anthonie's death record at ISIS-Zeeuws Archief gives his age as 62 years at death in 1831 and also names his parents as Adriaan du Mez and Leijntje Vervate. I have not yet found birth or marriage for Adriaan and Leijntje, only the records of three children.

Barbara Sample Schuler named Anthonie's father as Anthnie Dumez, born about 1729 though every record I've so far seen names his father as Adriaan.

The surname is spelled as "du Mez" in most if not all of the transcribed Zeeland Archives records at GenLias.

Marriage record to Lisea de Jonge states Daniel was the widower of Josina Hartsen. The 1804 marriage record gives her name as Jezina Haarsen, daughter of Isaak Haarsen and unknown Durie. That record also gives Daniel's birthplace (erroneously?) as Hoofdplaat, the same as that of the bride. Occupation given as 'coach driver' in marriage record of daughter Janna Catharina and also in death record of daughter Leijntje.

17. Andries duMez (Jannis⁵, Anthonij⁴, Anthonie³, Anthnie², Johan¹) was born 23 May 1783 in Biervliet, Zeeland NL ³ and died 23 Nov 1836 in Nieuwvliet, Zeeland NL.⁷

Left Aardenburg NL and arrived in New York on 7 Apr 1844, then moved to Milwaukee WI.

Original information about Andries from Barbara Sample Schuler named his parents as Anthnie duMez and Cornelia Pattist. But the marriage record of Andries and Adrianna names his parents as Jannis duMez and Jannetie van der Veere.

The record of his "brother" Anthonie's second marriage named his parents differently also but resolved a date issue I had with Barbara's information about Anthonie and Andries, namely that their father Anthnie was born about 1729. I always wondered whether there was a generation missing between Anthnie and Anthony.

I am for the moment then entering Andries' father as Jannis per his marriage record and leaving Jannis as a son of Anthnie. I stress that this is currently without documentation but done so as to not lose track of the original information. Further research will, I hope, either document or disprove these relationships.

Anthony du Mez, Aged 86, Dies - Funeral Services To Be Wednesday. CHATFIELD - An early resident of Sumner township, Fillmore county, Anthony E. du Mez, died Saturday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Otto Bernard of Pleasant Grove township, near here, at the age of 86 years.

Born on May 6, 1859, in Holland township, Sheboygan county, Wis., Mr. du Mez came to Minnesota at the age of 19 years with his cousin, the late Anthony du Mez of Spring Valley. He resided with his aunt, Mrs. Henry Hockema of Sumner township, Fillmore county.

For eight years he was employed as a farmhand and carpenter in that township, and in March, 1886, he purchased the land and erected the buildings for the du Mez farm which is now owned by Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Welch.

On March 31, 1886, Mr. du Mez married the former Myrtle L. Howard and the couple had four children, two of them, twins, Alvin Lee and Alice Lenora, who died in infancy. The surviving daughters are Mrs. Bernard and Mrs. E.J. Parman of Decorah, Iowa.

Mr. and Mrs. du Mez celebrated their golden wedding on March 31, 1936, on the farm which they had purchased 50 years before. Mrs. du Mez died on December 19, 1936. Since then her husband made his home with Mrs. Bernard.

Mr. du Mez had been actively interested in community affairs during his life. He served as an officer on school and town boards, and with his wife was active in the Sumner Center Evangelical church which edifice he helped to construct. He was a director and stockholder in the Co-op Livestock association, Co-op Creamery, Co-op Poultry and Feed company, Farmers elevator and National Bank at Stewartville, and served for 21 years as the community representative for the state prison twine and machinery company.

Surviving besides the daughters are two grandsons, Donald Street of Sheridan, Wyo., and Alvin Street of Stewartville ; two great grandchildren ; two half-brothers, Henry and John du Mez ; five half-sisters, Mrs. Arnold Ramaker, Mrs. Arthur Kolsta, Mrs. Will Ter Lindert and Miss Wilhelmina du Mez, all of Cedar Grove, Wis., and Miss Delia du Mez of Chicago. Six sisters and two brothers preceded him in death.

Services will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. in the Bernard home and at 2 p.m. in the Sumner Center Evangelical church, with Rev. Wesley Miller officiating. Interment will be in the Hamilton cemetery near Racine. The body will be at the P.H. Griffin funeral home in Stewartville from 11 a.m. Tuesday until 10 a.m. Wednesday when it will be taken to the Bernard home.

Pallbearers will be Clarence Flathers, Walter Welch, Henry Turner, Edward Fleshner, Carlton Denny and Frank Leibolt. Honarary pallbearers are M.J. Dixon, Edwin Brin, Henry Wood, Homer Wooldridge, John Stewart and William Betcher. -- Barbara Sample Schuler, genealogist

Anthony DeMez was born February 23, 1860 at Cedar Grove, Wisconsin, the youngest son of Anthony and Minnie Bern Scott DuMez. He came to Sumner Township when he was eighteen years old. Anthony was a farmer, cheese-maker and livestock buyer. He helped establish the Farmers' Cooperative Shipping Association in Spring Valley and served many terms on the Valley Center rural school board.

On February 4, 1885 he married Luella Babcock, adopted daughter of Edward and Mary Ann Babcock. She was born in Carimona Township on February 6, 1865. Mary Ann Babcock walked from their family farm north of Spring Valley to a Carimona farm to bring their infant daughter home. Luella was educated in the country schools and at the Wasioja Seminary at Wasioja, Minnesota. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Spring Valley, the Woman's Relief Corps and the Women's Christian Temperance Union.

Anthony and Luella had four daughters who remained in the Spring Valley area and all contributed to the community. There daughters were Eva (Mrs. James) Sample, Minnie (Mrs. Harry) Chipman, Dorris (Mrs. Hobard) Kinder and Dorothy (Mrs. Ben) Snyder.

The family lived two miles northeast of Spring Valley on 320 acres which they farmed. Upon retirement, Anthony and Luella moved to a home in Spring Valley on North Broadway. The home was located in the way of progress and was demolished for Highway 16 and 63. A granddaughter has all that remains today of the house, a bench made from the cornices and molding used in the home.

One of the customers for the DuMez cheese was in Carimona. Luella would deliver the cheese with a horse and buggy. Coming home she always drove the horse very hard as she was afraid of being stopped in the dense woods and robbed of her money.

Anthony and his family never missed a circus or traveling show that came to Spring Valley. One daughter told of the time he and the hired men were just too busy making hay to go to the circus. His wife and daughters went to town and were seated
waiting for the show to begin. Just as the band played the opening fanfare, Anthony and the hired men rushed in to find their seats ahead of the opening parade.

Anthony passed away in June of 1916 and Luella passed away on October 7, 1934. They were buried in the Spring Valley Cemetery. Their immediate descendants number eighty-three as of May 1982, many of whom are still living in the Spring Valley area.
