The Hoopes family is well documented both in PA and their original home in Yorkshire. Almost everything I have on the family is from either the Hoopes Family Record by Gerald R. Fuller or the Genealogy of the Smedley Family by Gilbert Cope, pub. in 1901.

Daniel and Jane's tenth child, Abraham, and his wife Mary Williamson lived in Edgmont, Chester PA where their nine children were born. Abraham was buried 17 Sep 1795 in the Middletown Friends Burial Ground, Delaware  PA where Mary is also buried. The date of her death is unknown but it was before her husband as she is not mentioned in his will.

  1. John - b. 10 Oct 1733 prob in Edgmont Chester PA; m. bef 1755 Phebe Williams  b. 20 Jun 1731 Plymouth Twp, Philadelphia, daughter of Rees Williams and Elizabeth Maulsby. There appears to be no further record of Phebe, both her death and burial unknown. See next section for John and Phebe's family.

  2. Sarah - b. abt 1734 Edgmont, Chester PA d. bef 5 Feb 1789; m. abt 1756 William Williamson b. 5 Aug 1731 d. 13 Feb 1815 Thornbury, Chester PA, s/o Thomas Williamson and Ann Malin

  3. Abraham - b. abt 1737 Edgmont, Chester PA d. bef 26 Jan 1825 Newtown, Delaware PA; m. Elizabeth Worrall, d/o John Worrall and Priscilla Lewis. Both Abraham and Elizabeth are buried Middletown Friends Burial Ground, Delaware PA. They had four children:

John Hoopes and Phebe Williams had six children:

  1. Abraham - b. 24 Oct 1755 prob in Chester  PA  d. Jun 1807 Newtown Twp, Delaware PA m. 6 Jun 1782 Susannah McNees. Also according to Gilbert Cope, Susannah's ancestry is unknown, after having "lived for 14 years with Daniel Gibbons".

     

    There may, however, be some knowledge of this Susannah perhaps being the daughter of William McNees and his second wife Lydia. All information on the McNees/McNeese family is from correspondence with Bill McNeese and is available on his McNeese website. The McNees family came from Ireland, settled in PA briefly before 1755, migrating first to Caroline Co MD and then to Greene Co TN. William and Lydia had at least six children, all born in MD. Susannah, in two family letters provided by Bill McNeese, is said to have married Abraham Hoopes but I can find no primary record of this marriage or her ancestry. In fact, in William McNeese's Greene Co will of 1808 there is no mention of Susannah or her family though she had been married for 26 years and had five children. I believe further research of primary records needs to be done before making this connection.

  5. Phebe - m. Joseph Hunt. According to Gilbert Cope, it is "supposed they removed westward but no trace of them has been found. An old list gives the following children: John, Phebe m. James Matson, Minerva, m. Samuel Johnston, Hannah m. Aaron Hall."

  6. Sarah - b. Mar 1767 d. 15 Oct 1852.  Probably the Sarah Hoopes listed as living, age 83, with her nephew Daniel Hoopes and his family in the 1850 PA census, East Town Twp, Chester Co.

Abraham Hoopes and Susannah McNees were married in Marcus Hook PA by Rev. George Craig. Beyond that little appears to be known of my 4G grandfather. He and Susannah had five children:

  1. Reese - b. 17 Nov 1782 d. 3 Jun 1838 Newtown, Delaware PA bur. Newtown Friends Burial Ground, Newtown PA; m. Ann Hunter  b. 1780 d. 1862 bur. Media Cemetery, Delaware PA, daughter of James Hunter and Martha Levis. (Carol Gillham is researching the Hunter family and gave me information on Ann's parentage.) Reese and Ann had no children.

  2. Daniel - b. 9 Mar 1784 prob in Chester PA d. 30 Oct 1862 Easttown Twp, Chester PA; m. 27 Oct 1808 in Delaware Co to Hannah Steel, daughter of William Steele and Elizabeth Butler (daughter of Hannah McCue and John Butler), according to both my father's notes and Gilbert Cope.

  3. Sarah - b. 25 Dec 1785 

  4. Alice - b. 2 Dec 1787 d. 28 Apr 1861

  5. Phebe - b. 8 Nov 1789

 

Daniel Hoopes and his wife Hannah are both buried in Goshen Friends Burial Ground, Chester PA. They had eight children:
