"Irish" John Leedom
and his descendants in PA and OH

 

 

There are few records in eastern PA (and none that I'm aware of in Ireland) of the man referred to, at least in some references, as "Irish" John Leedom, to distinguish him from my 6G grandfather, another John Leedom, though I don't believe Leedoms were actually native to Ireland. Most references to him available to me are unsourced. The information on this page is partly based on The Leedom Family by Sara Leedom Eachus. Please note that there are known factual errors in this book. I have noticed inconsistencies as I have been transcribing portions of it here that I have not resolved. I am presenting the information here as a starting point for further research. Much information was also provided by Leedom family researcher Peggy Durand. 

 

John Leedom is said to have been born in Ireland, to English parents whose names are unknown. Any information concerning the possible, if not probable, connection between this John Leedom and my 7G grandfather, Richard Leedom of Bucks Co PA, would be greatly appreciated.

"Despite exhaustive research, no connection has been found between the families of John Leedom and Richard Leedom. It is known that it was customary in the seventeenth century for English members of the Society of Friends to undertake missionary journeys, and many traveled to Ireland. It is possible that there is some ancestral connection between those missionaries and John Leedom that we have been unable to uncover, a connection that could also be made to the staunch Quakers in Richard Leedom's background."

It is frustrating that Sara Leedom Eachus does not write of any of the evidence leading her to state that John was born in Ireland to English parents and that he arrived in Bucks Co in 1744. I have found no passenger lists with any name even resembling Leedom listed. I am currently investigating whether there were any marriage ties between John's family and the two other Leedom branches in the Philadelphia area at that time. That members of all three families knew each other would seem reasonable to suppose. One family name, Dungan, appears to thread its way among the families of John of Ireland and John and William of Yorkshire. For now though, the statements Sara Eachus makes are the only clues I have about John Leedom of Ireland. Again, the undocumented information presented here is based almost entirely on her book until additional records are uncovered.

 

 

 

John, then, arrived in Bucks Co PA in 1744, almost certainly with his parents, when he would have been about 14 years old. Interestingly, 1744 is the same year Richard Leedom died in Bucks Co. In 1753 in New Britain, Bucks Co he married Letitia Jones. Letitia was born on 2 Apr 1730, the daughter of Thomas Jones and Martha West of New Britain, Bucks Co. John and Letitia  had nine children, some of whom were born in Bucks Co. Sometime between probably 1780, when 21 year old daughter Mary married in Bucks County, and 1790 John and Letitia moved to Redstone Country, Washington Co. in western PA. They and several of their children appeared in the 1790, 1800 and 1810 census records. John Ledom appears in the 1800 census as a resident of Nottingham Twp, Washington Co.

 

I have not found any records of the death of John or Letitia but they did not appear in the 1820 census. There are no Leedoms in the Washington Co will book index 1781-1900 so my project here is to discover the place as well as the date of their deaths.

 

There is a record of a John Leedom taking the Oath of Allegiance in Washington Co PA during the latter part of 1794. Whether this is John Leedom Sr., who would have been about 64 years old, or his son John, who would have been about 24 years old, is undetermined.

Thomas Leedom presumably married his first wife Mary Smith in the Bucks Co area sometime before 1789 when the first of their five children was born. Though Mary is said to have been buried in Delaware Co, I have not identified either her family or her burial place. Thomas was in Washington Co PA by 1808 according to this will filed in Greenburg, Westmoreland Co:

Wife Margaret; half brother Abner Gilbert, "now living with me", tract adjoining whereon Henry Marsh now lives, plantation and grist mill on Mingo Creek, Washington County, on which Thomas Leedom resides, 3/4 of which is mine.

After the death of Mary, Thomas Leedom married Hannah Humphrey, daughter of Thomas Humphrey and Mary Marks. Thomas Humphrey was born in Montgomery Co PA but removed to Loudoun Co VA. Following Thomas Leedom's death in 1840 in Washington Co PA, it is believed that Hannah, together with some of her brothers, moved to OH where she died.

From Peggy Durand: Thomas served in the Revolution at Stony Point under General Wayne and was among the first who scaled the wall and entered the fort. He had no real property, and they lived in different places in Bucks County until the death of his wife Mary, after which he moved to Redstone Country, Washington Co PA where his father had gone in 1770. The 1810 census lists him in Redstone Country, Washington Co  PA:

George Edgington Jr. and his first wife, possibly Mary Naylor, had nine children. One of these nine, Elizabeth "Tacy" married Almira's brother William Leedom. The Leedom book does not list any children for Almira and Nathaniel but Almira and George had eight children:

There is virtually no information on Martha and her family in The Leedom Family where it is stated only that they later moved to Redstone Country of Washington Co PA. I always suspected that Nathaniel was of the West family of Martha's mother, Letitia, and that was recently confirmed for me. Information on Nathaniel and Elizabeth's family was kindly forwarded to me by Jeff West from The Wests of Duck Creek, Harrison Co WV by William F. Donnolly.

Hannah (Jacobs) Leedom died 6 Jul 1819 but exactly where is not known to me. Joseph Leedom died in 1846, place also unknown. If he died in Washington Co, he left no will yet found so perhaps it is probable that he removed to OH or MO to live with one of his children.

 

 

 

 

John Leedom

John - b. abt 1770 New Britain, Bucks Co  PA; m. Isabela ___. They moved with John's brother Thomas, in 1815, to Muskingum Co OH. John and Isabela had five daughters, none of whose names are known to me. They are represented in the 1810 Washington Co census. According to The Leedom Family, John lived near his parents in Nottingham Twp, on land deeded to him by his parents. The deed was recorded 27 Apr 1795 for 68 3/4 acres. John later sold this land to John Withers on 31 Aug 1815 for $1202.50, in preparation for his move to OH.

 

 

 

 

Parentage of Thomas Leedom, b. 1790

Some researchers' family notes state that Thomas was the son of a Thomas Joseph Leedom and Mirah Thomas. Thomas Joseph was born in 1730 in South Milford, Yorkshire ENG and Mirah Thomas was born in 1735 in Maryland though I don't know the source of these birth dates and places. I have found only one record mentioning Mirah, the IGI birth of son Thomas, on 25 Sep 1755 in Bucks Co. I welcome any additional clarification on this family.
