Jeanes family

My knowledge of the Jeanes family in Pennsylvania begins with William Jeanes and his wife Esther Brewer, probably residents of Moreland, Montgomery Co by at least 1710 or so. This couple is shown on my father's family chart and has been the subject of family stories as long as I can remember. At one time my father had a square shoe buckle that was said to have belonged to William Jeanes. Supposedly, a plot of land now occupied by the Philadelphia Museum of Science was originally owned by someone in this family. A branch of this family was later to become very prominent in Philadelphia, known for their philanthropy, but documentation on my early Jeanes family and marriages has been difficult to find.

I have been unable to find any references to William Jeanes in early New York records. William Jeanes' PA will refers to a son James who had not arrived in PA by 1747 when the will was written.

First Generation

1. William Jeanes died on 10 Jun 1747.

General Notes: Middletown MM records:
5 Apr 1739 (5d 2mo, 1739) - William Janes and Elizabeth Baker intend to marry; he belongs to Abington monthly meeting.

7 Jun 1739 (7d 4mo, 1739) - Marriage of William Janes and Elizabeth Baker accomplished 24th of last month.

Philadelphia Will Book B, p. 98, Admin on the estate of Joseph Jeanes, died intestate, granted 13 Feb 1712/13 to William Jeanes of Bucks Co.

William Sluby was executor of the will of a Nathaniel Jeanes of Penns Neck (Salem Co NJ) on 5 February 1702/3, New Jersey Archives, 1st ser., 23:257. He was William Slooby of Philadelphia Co. when he conveyed to Jasper Yeates of Chester Co a 600 acre plantation on Lucas Point in Penns Neck on 21 July 1709 (unrecorded deed, Salem Co. Historical Society)

From Rochelle Rowlette who sent copy of letter detailing research by Sue Long: The Jeanes family in Pennsylvania starts with William Jeanes and his wife Esther. Research by Sue Long is partially quoted here:

"Wm. Jeanes is believed to have come to this country with his father and two brothers from England, and settled at New Rochelle, Westchester Co  NY, the family being originally from LaRochelle in France. It is not known when William Jeanes came to Pennsylvania or when he was married to Esther Brewer. In 1714, according to the records of Abington and Horsham meeting, a Robert Jeans married Jane Satterthwaite; could this have been a brother of William?"

William Jeanes died in 1747. He must have become a Quaker; his children married into Quaker families. In 1714, according to the records of Abington and Horsham meeting, Robert Jeans married Jane Satterthwaite; could this have been a brother of William?

Per WFT file 1899/4 William Jeanes arrived in New Rochelle NY April 6, 1699 from England with his two brothers. This is the same year descendant Marshall Jeanes believes William to have arrived in America on the Hector.

I do not know whether the William Jeanes referenced below is the same William who married Esther Brewer, related to him in some way or is of a different Jeanes family entirely. Several references are found to a Jeanes family in New England. From the Life of George Dewey Family History: An authentic historical and genealogical record of more than fifteen thousand persons in the United States by the name of Dewey, and their descendants, by Adelbert M. Dewey:

On 24 Mar 1675, Joseph Jeanes of Northampton [MA] sold to Josiah Dewey of Westfield a parcel of meadow land bounded on "the highwaies" northerly and southerly the sides lying against the lands of the successors of Richard Lyman westerly and Samuel Laughton easterly. 3 acres.

Witness:
William Jeanes
Abel Jeanes

I have not researched the Massachusetts Jeanes families enough to have found any connection between those Jeanes and my Pennsylvania Jeanes family. Any contributions to this effort would be appreciated.

Marshall Jeanes, a descendant, believes William to have arrived on the Hector in 1699. I am searching for any record of this ship.

One more finding: A William Sluby was executor of the will of a Nathaniel Jeanes of Penns Neck (Salem Co NJ) on 5 February 1702/03, New Jersey Archives, 1st ser., 23:257.
