I was not lucky enough to have known my grandfather Arthur Lubbers, as he died in 1950. But in researching all my mother's Dutch families, I am getting to know him just a little, along with many others I never had a chance to meet.
In the early 1790's, probably in Aalten, my 3G grandparents, Johannes Lubbers and Christina Beker were born. Rene Winkelhorst in the Netherlands has been kind enough to help me. (Rene is searching for any Winkelhorst families in America.) He found a birth record in Vorden, Gelderland for a Garritt Lubbers, born 16 Aug 1819, Arend's brother. He also found the birth record in Vorden for Arend, born 24 Feb 1825, and christened in the Catholic church in Aalten.
According to Arend's grandson Irwin Lubbers, Arend's brother Gerrit came to America with him and took a wagon train from St. Louis bound for California. Gerrit was never heard from again. The family suspected he was victim of a swindle in which members of a wagon train were killed and all their equipment resold to another group. According to Harold Lubbers, another grandson, Arend and Gerrit separated in Chicago, with Gerrit headed for the Klondike, never to be heard from again.
Hollanders Who Helped Build America, pub. by Vlekke & Buts, NY American Biography Co., states that Arend came to the U.S. at age 15 and settled in Sheboygan Co. (I am looking for a copy of this book as it also states that Arend served in the Civil War, though I can find no reference to him on any Civil War roster.) Upon arriving in the Town of Holland WI, Arend could not find a Catholic church so he began attending the Dutch Reformed Church and later converted.
Arend seems to have been quite a character (in what way exactly I'm not yet sure). He was married three times (at least) and did request at his death to not be buried next to any of his wives. This wish appears to have been carried out and when he died in 1912 he was buried alone in the Reformed Dutch Church cemetery in Cedar Grove WI.
Some confusion over Arend's marriages as shown on various websites seems to have been clarified with information received from Thelma Heil.
Hi, Katie,
As I was reading "from Katie's files," I noted that you were investigating the possibility that Hendrika Sikkink, daughter of Hendrik Jan Sikkink and Anna Catharina te Strake, married with William Rauwerdink & Arend J. Lubbers. Although both Wissink and Zwiebel report that as being true, I believe that that is incorrect.
Hendrika, born 1 April 1836, married in the Clymer, New York area, with Gerrit Jan Nieuwenhuis (Newhouse). I believe that Hendrika and her mother lived briefly in the Rochester area, New York, before coming to Clymer. Hendrika's mother lived in Clymer for awhile and then relocated to Cedar Grove, Wisconsin, where others of her fourteen children lived. Hendrika remained in the Clymer area, had nine children with Gerrit Jan Newhouse, and died in 15 July 1910 in French Creek, NY (town next to Clymer) and is buried in Holland Cemetery in Clymer.
Janna Willemina Sikkink, born 1 June 1825, sister of Hendrika, married 5 June 1855 in Winterswijk with Hendrik Jan Rauwerdink. Perhaps Janna Willemina married later with Arend J. Lubbers. For more information about that possibility and about the rest of the Sikkink family contact Don Sikkink.
Best regards,
Thelma Heil
Clymer, NY
Family stories from my grandmother confirm that, as a young boy, Arthur (her husband) traveled with his grandfather Arend to Rochester NY to bury Hendrika Rauwerdink. I have found no Rochester records of Hendrika as of yet.

From Rene Winkelhorst:
Today I was in the "Rijksarchief Gelderland" in Arnhem and I have searched a little. In Aalten there lived many people with the name Lubbers.
I searched in a birth-register of Vorden. I found a Arend born on 24-2-1825. I also found a Garrit Lubbers born on 16-8-1819. Maybe the brother of Arend? In a register of dead people I found another Gerrit Lubbers, died on 22-6-1821. Maybe the
same and the brother of Arend?
