For many years this was the branch of my father's family about which I knew the least. That was until hearing from Robert Nace in 2006. Robert is a cousin, descended from Joseph L. Nace, the older brother of my 2nd great-grandmother, Anna Elizabeth. Robert provided a wealth of information, from newspaper obituaries to burial records to city directory listings.
I am still learning more about this family and am forever grateful to Bob for taking the time to write to me and sharing so many details. He has copied records and book pages for me and has written many times, each time with clearly reasoned thoughts and carefully researched details.

My father's chart states that Tobias' father was John, but I suspected his father was Jacob on the basis of his residence in Tobias' household in the 1850 census Northern Liberties, Philadelphia Co. Jacob and a Margaret Nace are listed in the family household separated by four people including a different family (Haines).
Confirmation of Jacob as the father of Tobias was received from Robert Nace: Philadelphia Public Ledger dated 9/4/1852 has a death notice for Jacob Nace, father of Tobias Nace, on 9/3/1852.
In addition Robert provided the entries in the Philadelphia City Directory for 1810-1865 which included Jacob Sr, Jacob Jr and Tobias, occupations listed throughout the years as nailor, blacksmith, dealer, ironmonger.
Jacob lived with son Tobias in 1850 and perhaps as early as 1836 when he is not listed individually in the directory. His wife Catherine Margaret had died by 1833.
Robert and I both believe that the name Haines in the 1850 census was recorded in error and should have been Hannis. Esther Nace, daughter of Tobias married Joseph Hannis. Birth dates for both of them in later census records match those for the "Haines" listings in 1850.

Philadelphia. John Wright was 30 years old, born in PA, occupation listed as

The four Goodman children are listed immediately after Susan Wright. Mary Goodman was listed as 12 years old, Thomas H. was 12, Joseph was 8 and Elisa was 3.
Stephen was living at the time of his wife's death according to her 1873 obituary and was described as "the late" Stephen in the 1885 obituary of his daughter Cecelia.

Hannis-Suddenly, on June 21, 1910, Harry, husband of Caroline Hannis and son of the late Joseph and Esther Hannis. Due notice of the funeral, from his late residence, 2437 Sharswood street.
45 F iv. Catherine Hannis 17 was born about 1855 in Pennsylvania and died after 1920.
Boarded in the household of Albert Goodman and his wife Florence in 1880 census, district 220, Philadelphia. Kate is indexed as "Hamus" in the LDS census. Albert in turn resided with his wife's sister, Margaret, and her husband at 616 Franklin St.
Named Kate in 1880 record, Catherine in 1910 record when she is residing with her cousin Mary E. Leedom and her son in Philadelphia. She remained with her cousin through at least 1920 where she is listed again in their Oxford St household, age 65, single.
46 F v. Mary Hannis was born about 1855, died before 25 Jan 1857, and was buried 25 Jan 1857 in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Philadelphia PA.
47 M vi. Frank Hannis 9 was born about 1857 in Pennsylvania, died before 19 Oct 1861, and was buried 19 Oct 1861 in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Philadelphia PA.
Originally buried in Odd Fellows Cemetery at 21st. and Diamond St. In 1951, all the dead were removed to make way for public housing. Reinterred in Lawnview Cemetery. - Robert Nace
After looking for some years, I did finally find Anna and her family indexed under 'Nice' on the 1850 PA census. Margaret Nace's name is very darkly written almost looking as though it were written over twice. At first glance I could see why the family name was seen as 'Nice'. Looking more closely though, what was thought to be the dot over an 'i' is actually the tail of the top of the capital N. The 'a' is very clear and sits nestled close under the 'N'.
The 1850 census shows Anna E. among 10 people of various ages living in Tobias and Deborah's household. Anna and Margaret are not listed immediately below Tobias' three sons and and the list in general is confusing because it was not entered in any sort of family unit order.

• 1880 PA census Philadelphia, Philadelphia PA - Age 41, residing with second husband Robert Williamson and family in Philadelphia. Daughter Ella Conroy is listed with the family as a Williamson, aged 22.
• 1870 in Radnor Delaware Co PA - Anna apparently married her second husband Robert Williamson prior to 1870.
They are listed in 1870: Robert with his wife Anne E, age 32, and daughter Mary Ella Williamson, age 12.
• 1900 Newtown MA census - residing with her son-in-law Samuel W. Leedom age 47, his wife Mary E. age 42, their son Laurie M. age 7 and servant Mary A. McNeil age 24 born in Canada. Listed as Annie E. Williamson age 62, widow, married one year, one child born and 1 surviving. Stated born in PA, father and mother both born PA. The "married 1 year" statement must be in error as she and Robert were listed in both 1870 and 1880 census records and was, perhaps, meant as "widowed 1 year"?
I have a note from my father's papers in which Mr. Spencer J. Steinmetz is appointed godfather to Anna's grandson Laurie. It is signed, after his parents, by Anna E. Williamson (Anna Elizabeth Nace Conroy after divorce and remarriage).
Anna married Christopher C. Conroy, son of John Conroy and Mary (Conroy), before Dec 1857. Christopher was born in Ireland.
Probably divorced before 1890. Annie E. Williamson states in the 1900 census that she was widowed and had been married one year.
+ 48 F i. Mary Ella Conroy was born 10 Dec 1857 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia PA, died in Feb 1927 in Trenton, Mercer NJ, and was buried in Old Haverford Friends Burial Ground, Haverford, Delaware PA.
Anna next married Robert S. Williamson 19 before 1870. Robert was born about 1838 in New Jersey, died 20 Feb 1896, and was buried in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Philadelphia PA.
• 1870 - enumerated 28 Jul PA census Radnor, Delaware PA. This census listing may refer to this Robert and Annie though it gives William's birthplace as New York, very clearly written, instead of NJ. If the listing is this family and my father's notes are correct, Annie and her first husband, Christopher Conroy, divorced earlier than first thought.

Margaret was 9 years old and living in Tobias and Deborah's household in 1850. In 1870 Deborah, widowed for 5 years, is living with Margaret and her husband Joseph Wagner in Philadelphia.
In 1880, Joseph and Margaret resided on Franklin St with their two children, George and Walter, as well as Elmer Wilson, age 19. He is listed as step-son, born in NJ. Apparently Margaret was married once before her marriage to Joseph.
She died between 1880 and 1900 when husband Joseph is living with their son Walter and is described as widowed.

Aunt Betty remembers Mary Ella as a musician, playing piano and that she died of pneumonia. Betty also said on 7-27-1996 that Mary Ella may have been a Williams (probably meaning Williamson) prior to her marriage. Aunt Betty believed "there was a divorce in here somewhere". The death month and year shown here is an approximation only. Betty did not remember exactly when Mary Ella died.
Mary Ella is referred to in a family chart dated 1908 as "Ella Williamson" so it is probable that she took her step-father's name. In her marriage certificate, though, she is named as Mary Ella Conroy.

Odd Fellows' Cemetery - relocation to Lawnview
Company formed, Mount Peace acquired
The Odd Fellows Cemetery Co. of Philadelphia was incorporated in 1848 by an Act of the Pennsylvania Legislature, when the population of Philadelphia was only 400,000. The original Odd Fellows' Cemetery was located on Diamond Street, between 23rd and 24th Streets. In 1865, due to the growth of the city, grounds for a second cemetery were purchased from an estate named "Mount Peace," situated at what is now 31st Street and Lehigh Avenue, extending north to Hunting Park Avenue and Clearfield Street. The cemetery took its name from the estate from which it was purchased, and today occupies a 50-acre tract.
In 1907 the Company purchased 58 acres of land in Rockledge Borough and Abington Township to provide burial space at reasonable cost for families in Northeast Philadelphia, Rockledge, and the eastern portions of Montgomery County. Shortly afterward, an additional tract was added, expanding the cemetery grounds to a total of 75 acres. The new cemetery was named Lawnview because of the rolling flow of grounds. Today the Company maintains its offices in what was once the chapel at Lawnview.
Relocations from other grounds
In 1951, the site of the original Odd Fellows' Cemetery was acquired by the City of Philadelphia as the location for the public housing project known as the Raymond Rosen Housing Development. This required the removal and re-interment of approximately 65,000 bodies, for which a section of Lawnview's grounds, now known as Memorial Park, was set aside. In 1955, the Philadelphia courts were concerned with the deterioration and dilapidated condition of an historic burial ground, Monument Cemetery, located adjacent to Temple University at Broad and Berks Streets. The Company submitted a plan to the City of Philadelphia for the orderly and proper removal and reinterment of approximately 26,000 bodies in Lawnview's Memorial Park sections, where the graves would be provided with perpetual care. The Company's plan was accepted and the vacated ground sold to Temple University and the Philadelphia Board of Education.
According to the family chart, my 2G grandfather was Christopher C. Conroy, the son of John and Mary Conroy. I can find no birth, marriage or death records of him or anyone who may have been connected to him.
I have found one mention of a Christopher Conroy, shoemaker, in the Philadelphia City Directory of 1890, living at 140 S 6th Street but I do not know if this is "my" Christopher Conroy. According to our family notes, he would have married Anna Elizabeth Nace, daughter of Tobias Nace and Deborah Wiltsey, sometime before 1857 and presumably somewhere in the Philadelphia area.
My only paternal aunt remembered that Christopher and Anna divorced and that Anna remarried to a Williamson.
