Pease family

My husband Scott and I found our first possible common ancestor in the Pease family in England. We are most probably 14th cousins once removed but documentary evidence is lacking. My 13G grandfather John Pease and Scott's 11G grandfather Robert were probably brothers in Great Baddow, Essex ENG. Scott's page, here on our own site, has additional links to a Martha's Vineyard website and several descendant reports on Pease and other related families.

My connection to the Pease family in England is not directly to the more familiar branch in Great Baddow, Essex but to a branch in Yorkshire. Information about this Yorkshire branch has been provided to me by Charles E. G. Pease, a descendant of Joseph Pease, the brother of my 6G grandmother Hannah Pease.

It appears that sometime before 1540, Edward Pease (born in Essex, probable or possible son of John) moved north to Fishlake, Yorkshire near Leeds. At this point, this is pure conjecture. None of the Pease researchers have yet been able to document this Edward.

I would love to document all the Leedoms and Peases in Yorkshire during the 17th century but transcripts of the appropriate parish records are difficult to find. Any help in this regard would be greatly appreciated! Below is a list of towns in Yorkshire relevant to both families where I believe records could be found.

Place names in Yorkshire England:

Micklefield - about 5 miles east of Leeds
South Milford - 2.5 miles southeast of Micklefield
Burton - possibly Burton Salmon, 4 miles southeast of Micklefield
Sherborn - possibly Sherburn in Elmet, 2 miles east of Micklefield
Fishlake - about 16 miles southeast of Micklefield

Excellent research on the Pease family is also being done by several people, notably:

Steve Spicer has a wonderfully detailed Great Baddow, Essex Pease Genealogy section on his webpage, including parish register information.

Charles E. G. Pease has researched and documented both the Essex and Yorkshire branches but his web site, The Pease Family, appears to be inactive as of 4/29/2000. His father, Joseph Gurney Pease has information on his site about the early Pease family with more family details after their move to Darlington, County Durham.

Steve Lawson has detailed information on the Great Baddow Peases who settled in Salem, Essex MA on the Pease page of his website.
