My ancestral families include quite a few connections to Steel(e) families in Chester Co PA, the closest of which is that two of my 3G grandmothers were Steel(e)s. Although both spellings, with and without the "e", are used in my family notes for each grandmother, I am using throughout this page the most common spelling, without the final "e", except where it is specifically used in a record.

Until Sep 2000 I knew only that my two 3G grandmothers were first cousins, Hannah Steel the daughter of William Steel and Eliza Steel the daughter of Robert Steel. I had pieced together quite a bit of information about any Steel family in the Easttown, Chester Co area but I could not find documentation supporting my conclusion about William and Robert's parents. Curt Steel supplied me with information that connects not only William and Robert to their families but also connects several other Steels in my family to branches of the the larger Steel family in Chester Co. Without Curt's generosity my Steel connections would still be in fractured pieces.

1. James Steel was born of Chichester, Sussex ENG and died before 5 Mar 1742.

James Steel, of Chichester Co, of Sussex, a house carpenter, wife and family, from MM at Steyning, Sussex, dated 5 mo 6, 1702. Among the signers are Henry Steell and John Hammond (father of James Steel's wife).

James next married Martha Bowen on 3 May 1711 in Philadelphia MM, Philadelphia PA.⁶ Martha was born of Kent Co DE.

James and his two wives had twelve children but without birth dates for all of them I cannot determine which ones were born to which wife. There are many references to James' children in William Wade Hinshaw's Encyclopedia of American Quakers, vol 2, Philadelphia Monthly Meeting. I have listed them all as children of Martha Hammond rather than arbitrarily assigning some to Martha Bowen. The first six at least though were born to Martha Hammond.

He left his plantation to his wife Elizabeth Lewis and legacies to all his children save daughter Margaret who had perhaps died by then.

41. William Steele ¹¹ (John³, Robert², James¹) was born in 1758 in Easttown, Chester PA ¹⁶ and died in 1826 in Willistown, Chester PA.

General Notes: William's death year is according to Chester Co PA records: William Steele, Willistown , d. 1826, intestate. While I have not yet been able to see this record or any detail and do not know positively that the record refers to this William Steele, it seems likely given that he resided in Willistown for the 1810 and 1820 census listings and was not anywhere in Chester Co in 1830.

His name does not appear in any of the extracts of seen of Newtown Friends Burial Ground where I believe his wife Elizabeth was buried some 24 years after his death.

There was also a William Steel (listed next to a John Steel) in 1810 in New London, Chester Co, 1m <10, 1m 26-45, 1f 26-45 but none of the ages fit this William and his known children.

William married Elizabeth Butler, daughter of John Butler and Hannah McCue, before 1784. Elizabeth was born in 1766 ²⁴ and died after 1850.²⁴ There were several Butler families in the area, most notably that of Noble Butler. Photocopies of documents published by the Butler Family Association in 1982 that detail Noble Butler's family fail to provide anything conclusive about John Butler. (The McCue family is better documented, as Hannah's father Samuel McCue married Ann Wayne, aunt of Gen. "Mad" Anthony Wayne.)

42. Robert Steel (John³, Robert², James¹) was born in Jun 1762 and died on 3 Oct 1830 in Willistown, Chester PA.

General Notes: Marriage date from Record of PA Marriages, Vol II, page 481.

So far I have not confirmed finding Robert in Chester County prior to 1820. In the 1800 census there is a listing for a Thomas Bishop in Easttown with 1 male over 45, 1 26-45, 1 16-26, 2 10-16 and 2 under 10, 2 females 26-45, 1 10-16 and 1 under 10.

Robert Steel married Jane Bishop (whose parents are not yet identified) in 1798 and I wonder if it is possible that Robert and Jane were living with her family in 1800. Not knowing anything at all about this Thomas Bishop it is impossible to know but I still wonder if he may be Jane's father.

In 1810 there is a Robert Steel listed in Honeybrook, Chester Co that may be this Robert. The oldest man listed is 26-45 years old which would be the right age. There are two sons, 1 <10 and one 16-26, and only one daughter <10 listed. This isn't a match for Robert and Jane's daughters, though, unless the IGI approximations of birth years for them are wrong. I have found no other references to their births.

General Notes: Possibly (probably?) the Horatio Steel listed in the 1840 census of Edgemont, Delaware Co, age 30-40 with three males under 5, his wife 20-30 and one daughter under 5 years old. A Jane Steel is listed on the same page, age 40-50 with one female 10-15.

There is an Ann Steele listed in the 1860 census of Philadelphia, the right age, 50, married to Robert Steele, age 52. The list of children in their family matches the one in 1850 for Horatio and Ann with the usual age variances and the unexplained addition of a daughter Sarah. (Perhaps she is the very young wife of the second youngest son Elwood.) After finding Horation didn't die until 1870 I am at a loss to explain this family in the census. Horatio did have a brother Robert about whom I know nothing more than his name from Colonial Families of Pennsylvania. Perhaps he named all his children with the same names as those of his brother Horatio.

General Notes: There is only one Steel listed in Easttown in 1830, William. There are two young females 1 under 5 and 1 10-15. The oldest woman, aged 50-60, is probably his widowed mother Elizabeth but it seems that William's wife Sarah Ann is not listed.

In 1840 William Steel is again listed in Easttown, the only male in the household, aged 40-50, with two young girls, 1 under 5 and 1 5-10 which now fit the ages of two known daughters, 1 woman 30-40 and one 70-80. The ages of the two women fit that of his wife Sarah Ann and his mother Elizabeth.

William and Sarah Ann are listed in the 1850 PA census, East Town Twp, Chester Co, with two daughters Sarah E. and Lydia. There is also Ann Steel - age 62, Joseph - age 28 carpenter, Robert Steel - age 57 and Elizabeth Davis - age 60. I think the Ann Steele in the household is William's sister-in-law, Ann Rowland, widow (apparently) of his brother John.

There is also a William Steel listed in the index to an 1857 census of Easttown, Chester Co. I have not found a copy of this census yet.

Listed in Easttown in 1860. William is head of the family, aged 60, Elizabeth aged 25 (the Sarah E. age 15 in 1850). Daughter Lydia is living with them, aged 20 and now named Smith next to 25 year old William A. Smith and their 7 month old daughter. Betsey E. Davis is also listed, still aged 60, and relationship still not identified.

With Edwin's son Thomas born about 1858, Edwin was probably married, on his own and not living with his parents for the 1860 census. I believe this is the widowed Ann Steel Smith but want to try to verify before entering Edwin as her son.

There is an Ann Smith in the census records of Easttown, Chester Co, age 71 in 1870 and age 82 in 1880. In both listings she is living with son Edwin (age 56 in 1880), his wife Celina (age 50 in 1880) and their son Thomas (age 22 in 1880). There is a record of the burial of an Ann Smith in these records, d. 4, 6, 1885, aged 87 years, but the obituary found later in the Philadelphia Inquirer shows that Ann Smith to have been the widow of Charles Smith.

In the 1870 census Chs. P. Smith is in Fall River, LaSalle Co IL, age 40, born in PA. His wife Eliza R. was age 36, born in PA. All six of their children were born in IL but one of the youngest is, interestingly, named John D. (Perhaps the middle initial stands for Davis?) Children in 1870: Anna R, Mary E, Florence E, Clara E, John D, Valeria E.

Charles is not with his parents in 1860 though two of his brothers were. There is a 38 year old Charles Smith living in the north ward of Chester in 1870, a laborer in a household with a 40 year old Henry Smith, probably a brother. Davis and Ann Smith did not have a son Henry, though, and the use of the middle initial "P" in the IL listing (same as used in 1850 census) leads me to believe that that listing refers to their son Charles. This is supposition, though, not proven. The Charles in IL also named a daughter Valeria, the middle name of one of this Charles Smith's nieces.

General Notes: Living with parents in Carnaervon, Berks Co in 1850, named as S. Leedom Smith, age 18, occupation given as teacher. Named as Leedam Smith later in the 1880 census when he was living with his older brother Davis Roberts Smith who was already married by 1860 and is therefore not listed with his parents in that census. Seal, mother-in-law. She is aged 78 and is also widowed.

In 1900, Albertine H. Seal is 48 years old and living with her husband Joseph and their family in Swarthmore. They had six children living with them, three of whom were daughters. In addition to Emma there is Mabel and Lydia, one of whom must have eventually married Ezra Cresson.

I have not confirmed the relationship, if any, of Albertine Seal to the family of John Seal who married Anna Steel.

Mr. Lilburn H. Steel died on Saturday at his residence on Locust avenue, Germantown.
Mr. Steel was a son of the late Mr. Canby Steel, of the Farmers and Merchants Bank, in which situation he himself held a position till he was appointed to the post of paying teller for the Pennsylvania Company for Insurance on Lives and Granting Annuities. In their institution he continued during the remainder of his life. He rapidly won the confidence of the heads of the corporation, and in due time the post of treasurer becoming vacant he was selected to fill it. Some time ago he had a paralytic stroke, the result, it is believed, of previous ailments, and his life was for a time despaired of. He rallied, however, and got about again, though he was never able to give to his duties as treasurer the same attention as before, Within a few days he had a second paralytic stroke, from which he never recovered. He leaves a widow and four children, one of whom, Mr. George Steel, is in business in Germantown. The funeral takes place today from his late residence in Germantown, interment at Chestnut Hill.

The Lancaster Family by Harry Fred Lancaster has this reference: (2) Susanna Hagy Roberts was born August 27, 1837. She married Lylburn H. Steele, son of Canby and Amelia Steele, in 1866. He has been deceased for many years. Their children were:
(a) Helen Wiggins, who married Clarence J. Peterson, and has one child, Clarence Jr.; (b) Canby; (c) Estella; (d) Lylburn.
