Taggart family
 

I wrote this Taggart page not because I have an extensive Taggart family line but because I have so little information on two Taggart family connections in the Philadelphia PA area. Any clues to either of these Taggart families will be appreciated.

 

 

 

George Corson Taggart

The first connection is George Corson Taggart who married a great-aunt, Corinthia Ann Crowell. Corinthia, or Carrie as she was later referred to, was the daughter of Robert Craig Crowell and Sara Ann O'Dell and was born 19 May 1875 in Greene Co TN.

 

According to my only paternal aunt, George was a doctor or pharmacist in Philadelphia. I have no idea how George and Corinthia met but according to my family notes she and George were married 6 Jul 1897 in Greeneville TN. Corinthia's father had died just six months earlier and when she and her new husband returned to Philadelphia they may have taken Carrie's mother Sara Ann and six year old younger sister Sara Alys with them. By 1910 at least they were all living in the Taggart household. Carrie died 17 Jan 1917 in Philadelphia and I have found no further record of George. They had no children as far as I know.

 

The online Taggart Surname Resource Center lists a George Corson Taggart, b. 19 Oct 1869, with no further details given. There is also a listing in the Philadelphia City Directory of 1890 for G. Corson Taggart, druggist, living at 1622 S 20th.

 

I originally thought that with the rather well known (in my mind) middle name of Corson it would be relatively easy to find George's family. But these are the only two references to him I have found in years of searching.

 

 

 

Daniel Leedom Taggart

The second connection is intriguing because it seems to have occurred more than 50 years before my great aunt Corinthia Crowell married a Taggart. I first ran across the name Daniel Leedom Taggart in an online query written in Dec 2000 by Jen Shoemaker:

I've been doing research on my family and am kind of stuck right now. I have information back to Daniel Leedom Taggart, 9/19/1848-1/1/1922 and I believe his father's name was also Daniel, but any further back, I'm not sure. Has anyone come across Taggart's in the Chester Co area of PA? I'd appreciate any info.

Attempts to respond to her query have failed and I have not yet located a valid address for her.

I subsequently found the following information in census records but have still not identified their connection to a  Leedom family.

 

1. Daniel Taggart was born about 1824 in Pennsylvania.

Daniel Taggert - age 26, carpenter, b. PA [b. abt 1824]
Mary A. - age 26, b. DE [b. abt 1824]
John L. - age 7, b. PA [b. abt 1843]
Mary - age 5, b. PA
Sarah - age 4, b. PA
Daniel - age 2, b. PA [b. abt 1848]
Henry Gray - age 8/12, b. PA
Mary L. - age 45, b. PA [b. abt 1805]

 

Daniel married Mary A. (Taggart), daughter of Mary L.. Mary was born about 1824 in Delaware.
 

Child:

+ 2 M    i. Daniel L. Taggart was born poss 19 Sep 1848 and died poss 1 Jan 1922.
 

Second Generation

2. Daniel L. Taggart (Daniel¹) was born poss 19 Sep 1848 and died poss 1 Jan 1922.
 

Daniel married Catharine Wanner. Catharine was born poss 1856.

Children:

   3 M    i. John Taggart was born poss 1882 in Pennsylvania.

+ 4 M    ii. William Leedom Taggart was born poss 30 Mar 1888.

 

Third Generation

4. William Leedom Taggart (Daniel L.², Daniel¹) was born poss 30 Mar 1888.
 

William married Mary Emma Witman.

General Notes: Daughter of William Witman and Dolly Kessler.
 

Child:

   5 M    i. William Leedom Taggart.

 

 

There is also a submission to the IGI that appears to be about the same family. Dr. Todd Darrah Strong details the family of Daniel Taggart (born 1849 PA) and his wife Catherine (born 1856 PA). Two sons are listed, John Taggart (born 1882 PA) and William Leedom Taggart (born 30 Mar 1888 PA).

 

I would love to know what family connections led Daniel Taggart to give his son the middle name of Leedom, a middle name that son then passed on to one of his own sons.
