Van der Jagt family

An detailed record of some very early Van der Jagt family was shared with me by a cousin, Dr. Robert Varman, when we corresponded many years ago after he saw the Van der Jagt connections on this web site. Robert is a descendant of Neeltje, sister to my 6G grandfather, Jan Cornelisz Manus and his website has more on the descendants of Neeltje. I am indebted to him for providing so much early information on this family in the Netherlands.

More recently, Roberta Lewis, great-granddaughter of John VanderJagt and Josephine (Jozena) DeMaster, first contacted me in 2004. She has been extremely generous in sending me scads of family photos and pages from a typed family genealogy that I didn't even know were missing from my copy. Most of the information I have on the more current van der Jagt families is from Roberta.

Known as "Holstein Bill" because of his pure bred Holstein cattle herd. At his funeral in the rural countryside, cows from the neighboring field came to the fence surrounding the cemetery, overlooking the gravesite, and watched as his coffin was lowered into the ground.

"My grandma also told me about how the cows lined up at my Great Grandpa's
funeral. So I found it interesting you wrote that on your website. She
told me that he loved his herd and when one needed to be sold, he would see
it off. He would walk to the end of the driveway as the truck drove off and
would stand and watch until he couldn't see the truck anymore. And when he
died the cows stood watch until they couldn't see him anymore." - Jeff Huenink

JOHN VAN DER JAGT, a veteran of the late war, residing on section 35, in the town of Holland, is numbered among the old pioneer settlers of Sheboygan County. He is a native of the village of Burg, province of Schouwen, Holland, born June 5, 1837, and is a son of Cornelius and Martha (Bunefeltt) Van der Jagt, being one of four surviving children. The others are: Leonard, who is a farmer of Holland Township; Minnie, who became the wife of John De Master, a business man of Cedar Grove; and Peter, who is a farmer of Baldwin, St. Croix County, Wis.

Our subject was twelve years of age when he accompanied his parents, who, with six children sailed for the United States. During the passage a baby sister was taken sick and died and was buried at sea. Mr. Van der Jagt remembers one very severe storm encountered, which lasted twenty-four hours and brought terror to the hearts of all On board, but the good ship weathered the storm, landing all in safety in New York. The family came direct to Sheboygan County, where the parents passed the remainder of their lives. Mr. Van der Jagt attended school in the old log schoolhouse, situated on section 26, in the town of Holland, which was presided over by William Higby, the pioneer schoolmaster in this township. However, his educational advantages were limited to three months during the winter season. He early learned to assist in the work on his father’s farm, and in a new country, where all was in a state of wildness, there was much work for everyone that could aid in any way. His father, in connection with another, improved and cultivated a farm of one hundred and ten acres.

On the 4th day of March, 1862, Mr. Van der Jagt was united in marriage with Miss Jozena De Master, daughter of Peter and Johanna (Blanker) De Master, pioneers in the town of Holland, both long since deceased. Mr. and Mrs. Van der Jagt became the parents of twelve children, eight of whom are living, as follows: Cornelius, born February 10, 1865, and now a resident of Indian Territory; Jennie, born October 5, 1867, who became the wife of J. Sheehan, of Milwaukee; Martha, born December 22, 1870; Peter, born October 26, 1871; Minnie, born January 13, 1874, also in Milwaukee; Sarah, born March 17, 1876; Josephine, born February 22, 1880; and John, born February 12, 1883.

Mr. and Mrs. Van der Jagt began their domestic life in a log cabin, which was built on his present farm. About 1880 a modern dwelling was erected, but in the new home only a few years were spent. Mrs. Van der Jagt was called from this life March 14, 1888, and three days later, on the birthday of her daughter Sarah, she was laid to rest. She was a good Christian wife and mother, esteemed and beloved for her many excellencies of character by all who knew her.

When President Lincoln called for volunteers to put down the rebellion, Mr. Van der Jagt was among the number who made response and entered the service of his adopted country, where he served as a soldier with honor to himself and the Union.

In his political views, Mr. Van der Jagt is a Republican, and supports the principles advocated by that party. He and his family attend the First Presbyterian Church of Cedar Grove, in which they take an active part. Their home is a pleasant one, and the love of the children for their father, who has ever made their lives happy, sharing alike in their joys and. sorrows, is unbounded. Mr. Van der Jagt is a popular and respected citizen, and is well known throughout this portion of the county.

LEONARD VAN DER JAGT, one of the pioneer settlers of Sheboygan County, is a native of the province of Zeeland, Holland, where he was born September 19, 1839. His parents, Cornelius and Martha (Bunnefeltt) Van der Jagt, and six children sailed from Alvord Schloss for New York. The voyage was made in a three mast sailing-vessel of American make, and consumed some twenty-eight days. During the passage one of their children, a little girt, two years of age, died. Our subject remembers many incidents connected with this memorable journey. They experienced one storm of great severity, which lasted many hours, terrifying the five hundred passengers on board, but happily it passed without harm to boat or crew.

After a stay of two weeks in the city of New York, Mr. Van der Jagt brought his family to this county, coming by way of Buffalo and the Lakes to Sheboygan. In the latter city they stopped at the Wisconsin House, which was kept by Joseph Schrage. Here they rented a house until the father could have time to select their new home, but at the expiration of six weeks they removed to the town of Holland, where the latter purchased eighty acres of land on section 35. It was heavily timbered, and about all the improvement that had been made was a log house, 20x30 feet, in which the family lived for some fifteen years, when it was replaced by a house of later and more improved architecture.

Cornelius Van der Jagt was a painter by trade, and followed that vocation until advanced in life. On the old homestead stands a barn, 36x48 feet, the painting of which was about the last work he undertook, he being then seventy-four years old. He and his wife became the parents of thirteen children, eight sons and five daughters, four of whom still survive: John. a farmer of Holland Township: the gentleman whose name heads this article: Peter, a farmer of St. Croix County. Wis and Minnie who became the wife of John De Master, of Cedar Grove, a sketch of whom will be found elsewhere in this work.

In his political affiliations. Mr. Van der Jagt was a Republican, standing by his party in victory or defeat. He and his wife were charter members of the First Presbyterian Church of Cedar Grove, their daily walk in life being in harmony with the profession they made. Both were held in high esteem by all who knew them for the honorable and upright lives they led. Their last days were spent in the town of Holland, his death occurring on the 5th of February, 1886, and his wife’s, August 8, 1875. she having preceded him by several years.

Leonard Van der Jagt was ten years old when he came to the United States with his parents in 1849, and was, therefore, largely educated in the early schools of this county, where his life has since been passed. Until his marriage he remained at home, aiding and assisting his father on the farm. November 6, 1863, marks the date of his union with Minnie Stokdyk, a daughter of Adolph and Anna (Peters) Stokdyk. Of this union one child was born, Peter, who died in infancy. Mrs. Van der Jagt was a native of Groningen, Holland, and was born August 5, 1843, and died January 25, 1865. After the death of his wife, Mr. Van der Jagt wedded Miss Alice Stokdyk, a sister of his first wife, their marriage occurring April 13, 1868. The lady was born January 22, 1847, and is a native of the town of Holland.

Unto Mr. and Mrs. Van der Jagt twelve children were born, nine of whom survive: Adolph, who was born January 1, 1873, and is a printer by trade, residing in Milwaukee: John, born April 7, 1874; Henry, October 8, 1875; Martha, January 18, 1879: Nettie, August 25, 1880; Minnie, June 23, 1882; Peter, July 2, 1884: Elmer, April 23, 1885 and Cornelius, January 18, 1889 .All except the first-named are at home with their parents.

The family attended the Presbyterian Church at Cedar Grove, which was incorporated about 1860. Like his father, Mr. Van der Jagt is a staunch Republican in politics, he has a good farm of eighty acres, well cultivated and improved, and he is considered one of the substantial farmers of this section of the county.
