No children

[1] I don't have absolute proof that several of the children of Benjamin and Harriet I have listed here were their children. Census records and circumstantial evidence indicate that some of them were, but it is also possible there could be another relationship, like nephew or niece, for some of them. Of the eleven children listed I know for a fact that four were their children: Daniel, Myron, William and Jerome.
According to census records, Benjamin was born VT 1793 and Harriet (maiden name unknown) born NY 1796. The family resided in New York at least between 1827 and 1835 (birth years of the four known sons) and then to Harbor Creek, Erie PA by 1840 (they did move to Harbor Creek and a Benjamin Moore is listed there in 1840 - Moore a very common name but this is probably him). I don't know where in New York the family lived before 1840, census records of possible son Zara W. Moore (below) at Macedon, Wayne NY hopefully a clue. MI census records of all those listed above as Benjamin and Harriet's children list them as born NY. Before 1850 most of the Moore family moved to Lorain Co OH, probably to Wellington Township (I haven't seen the 1850 census rolls but indexes show many of this family at Wellington). Benjamin and Harriet, and probably some of the family, moved to Pipestone Twp, Berrien MI in 1854 - son William and his family came in 1855.
Since I know for certain that just four of the eleven children of Benjamin and Harriet's were theirs, maybe the best way to proceed would be to just list each child and describe the circumstances which make it possible that they were their children.

  1. Zara W. Moore. b. abt 1820 NY, resided Macedon, Wayne NY in 1850, but in MI by 1855, at Pipestone Twp 1860. His wife Lucy Lake was the daughter of Wells W. and Harriet Jane (Sabin) Lake. Lucy's brother Stephen married Mary Jane O'Roarkes, following Stephen's death Mary Jane married John Brant (and there are a ton of Moore/Brant connections following). In addition to coming to MI, and probably to Pipestone Twp, at about the same time as Benjamin and Harriet, Zara named two of his children Jerome and Harriet. Though neither an uncommon name, Jerome was the name of a possible brother and Harriet, well, could have been named after a mother or mother-in-law in this case.

  2. George W. Moore. b. abt. 1821 NY, resided Harbor Creek, Erie PA 1850, moved to MI before 1857 and was at Pipestone Twp, Berrien MI by 1870. In 1850 George and wife Mary H. Beagle had two children: Benjamin age 5 and Harriet age 8 months. The 1870 census doesn't list children Benjamin and Harriet with father George, but they would have been adults by that time. The 1870 census does list him with children Mary, George, Ira and Oscar - all born in MI from 1857 through 1864. There is a little confusion here, though. The 1870 census lists George W. Moore's wife as Sarah age 36 (born 1834 NY). In 1850 his wife was Mary age 26 (born 1824 NY). Possible divorce here? The 1890 Berrien Co directory lists Mary as the widow of George W. Moore, but in 1870 his wife is named Sarah. The 1870 census shows Mary Moore age 45 (b. abt 1825) living with Benjamin Moore age 25 (b. 1845) at Bainbridge Twp, Berrien MI. Undoubtedly mother and son. Living next door to them (next house in the census) was Porter and Harriet (Moore) Brant - Mary's daughter Harriet. By naming two children Benjamin and Harriet one would think that would cinch George W. as the son of Benjamin and Harriet Moore. Unfortunately George's death record in Berrien Co confuses the matter somewhat. George died 6 Nov 1880 at Benton Harbor, Berrien MI. His death record lists his parents as: "___ Moore & Aseneth ___".

  3. Milo Moore. b. abt. 1824 NY. Though I don't know Milo to have been a son, he was born in NY, a Milo Moore is listed in the 1850 census index at Wellington Twp, Lorain OH, and he was in MI by 1857 - lived at Sodus Twp, Berrien MI in 1860. The birth places of his children given in the 1860 and 1870 censuses follow the migration route of this Moore family: first two children b. PA before 1850, next child b. OH abt 1850 and remaining children b. MI after 1856. Jerome Moore, whom I know to be a son of Benjamin and Harriet, named his first son Milo.

  4. Daniel Moore. b. abt 1827. In an 1890 affidavit for Susan (Gotham) Moore, widow of William, Daniel stated he was William's brother and that he resided at Harbor Creek, Erie PA in 1845 and witnessed the marriage of William and Susan. In 1890 Daniel resided in Benton Harbor MI but I have no further info.

  5. Phebe J. Moore. Phebe is probably the most iffy as a child of Benjamin and Harriet in my list. MI Marriage Records (through the LDS IGI) gives the marriage date of Phebe Jane 'More' to John Brant (son of Simeon and Sarah (Herrington) Brant) as 12 Nov 1840 in Berrien Co MI. John Brant married 2nd) on 11 Mar 1858 at Berrien Co to A. 'More' - A. More probably Aseneth Moore. Brant researcher Edwyn Draper has Phebe's birthdate as "25 ? Mar 1827" and death on 5 Nov 1857. It is possible that the birthdate is incorrect and he does have a question mark in it - born 1827 and married in 1840 meant she would have been 13 years old when she married. Mr. Draper has in his notes that Phebe and Aseneth were sisters but does not know the source of that piece of info. Berrien Co Marriage Records do list that John Brant married two 'Mores', so it is possible they were sisters. If Phebe were a daughter of Benjamin and Harriet, and she married at Berrien Co in 1840, that would mean she had moved to MI fourteen years before her parents. That seems unlikely. Possible there is some other relationship to Benjamin and Harriet - possibly a brother of Benjamin's had gone to MI about 1840? Dunno. More information about John Brant's 2nd wife Aseneth Moore below.

  6. William Moore. b. abt 21 Apr 1828 NY; d. 31 Jan 1890 Benton Harbor MI. William married Susan Gotham at Harbor Creek, Erie PA on 17 Aug 1845 - they are my 3G grandparents.

  7. Aseneth Moore. b. abt. 1831 NY; d. 1893 Berrien Co MI. This is probably the "A. More" listed in Berrien Co Marriage Records as the second wife of John Brant - married 11 Mar 1858 Berrien Co. I have no record of when John Brant died, but in the 1860 census of Pipestone, Berrien MI Aseneth Brant, age 29 b. NY is listed with Benjamin and Harriet Moore - she would have been born abt. 1831 ("1831?" is also the year of birth Brant researcher Edwyn Draper (see note for Phebe above) has for the A. Moore who married John Brant. A. More/Moore and Aseneth Moore probably the same person, though this doesn't necessarily mean she was Benjamin and Harriet's daughter. However, the 1850 census of North End Twp, Erie PA (which is the township just northeast of Harbor Creek) lists an "Asenith Moore" age 19 born NY listed as head of household - only person at the address. At age 19 she could be this same Aseneth (born 1831) and since she lived in Erie PA was probably related to Benjamin and Harriet Moore.

  8. Myron Moore. b. 1833 NY, resided Pipestone Twp, Berrien MI in 1860 with his family and Benjamin and Harriet. Recent correspondence with a descendant of Myron has confirmed his parents as Benjamin and Harriet.

  9. Jerome Moore. b. abt 1835 NY. In an 1890 affidavit for Susan (Gotham) Moore, widow of William, Jerome stated he was William's brother and that he resided at Harbor Creek, Erie PA in 1845 and witnessed the marriage of William and Susan. In 1890 Jerome resided at Oceana Co MI.

  10. Harriet Moore. b. abt 1838 NY. The 1870 Pipestone, Berrien MI census lists Harriet Hoadly "at home" with Benjamin and Harriet with her three Hoadly children.

  11. Byron Moore. This may be a mistake in the 1860 census index, which lists him separately - this usually reserved for heads of house or family in an index. In viewing the census roll I don't recall seeing a Byron as a possible BROTHER of Myron, Byron was listed as son of Myron in the actual census.
