I found Skiles F Montague while doing a search for Skiles. Curiosity got the better of me. I wrote and asked him how he got his first name. Here is his answer.
My first name is the same as my father's. He was named for Roman Skiles who was a good friend of my grandfather. My entire family history file can be downloaded from my homepage. TTYL (:-}

My father Cortia Thomas Skiles was born April 8, 1909 in Alexander CO, IL. As a boy growing up he lived in and around Alexander CO & Union CO, IL. His father Thomas Jefferson Skiles died in an automobile accident on the way to work, when Cortia was only about 19 years of age, (his mother passing away about 10 years later).
After the deaths of both parents my father decided to move out of the area, times were hard where he lived. The economy was slow (and still is). After serving in World War II on the Aleutian Islands, (he really did not see any action). He was discharged at Ft. Custer, Battle Creek, MI. He liked the climate and all of the different types of vegetation growing in Michigan. So he decided to settle there. Having moved to Kalamazoo CO, MI he met and married my mother Pauline Jane Baker.
Dad lived a long and very full life helping raise me and my 3 older siblings. I was brought into this world on October 15, 1957, on the 157 Wedding anniversary of my gr., gr., gr. grandparents William Skiles & Elizabeth Miller (of Greene CO, TN). 27 years later my youngest child was born on October 15, 1984.
I grew up not knowing anyone in my father's family. When I was pregnant with my oldest child I decided to find out about my fathers family. So, pen in hand, I started to ask questions of my father. Needless to say he knew very little. So we made a couple of trips to southern Illinois. While there I stumbled across some more Skiles. My family stillswears up and down we are not related.
Well, like all genealogists, I kept digging for the missing link. This other family (which became them there Pope CO Skiles of no relation), descend from James Skiles & Mary Burton Anderson. And yes I still have not been able to tie them in with my direct line. But everything I have come across leads me up the path to Greene CO, TN and in to Sommerset CO, MD. I hope one day to find out how we all fit together in this family.
At a genealogical seminar I attended a speaker referred to the website as an extended community. It is nice to know that in this community are all of you Skiles - Skyles who are my relation. Yes, now I know about my dads family. And am still learning.

My father(David Lee Skyles) use to tell me that some where back in time there were two Skyles brothers that hated each other so the one
wanted his name to be skyles and the other one kept the name skiles.
That was his answer to "Are the Skyles and Skiles related?" I am not
sure if my father was just telling that story to entertain me or if he
really knows what he is talking about. He say's somewhere there are two
tombstones side by side one with the spelling "Skyles" on ones and the
other one "Skiles". Right about then I started to really wonder about
this bit of information...(I was waiting for his nose to start growing). Tammy Skyles
