| Robert wrote a letter on 17 May 1816 to Lord Bathurst, where Robert refers to his brother-in-law William Paterson (HRA letter). At that time he resided at No. 16 Queen Square, London [803] --- George WILSON at Westminster 16 Queen Square address (present-day Queen Anne's Gate): 1. In HOLDEN'S DIRECTORY, 1814-1815, Section on Clothiers &c. WILSON, George (army) 16, Queen sq. Westminster 2. In KENT'S DIRECTORY OF LONDON, 1816. WILSON, Geo. army-clothier, 16, Queen-square, Westminster 3. In POST-OFFICE LONDON DIRECTORY for 1820: WILSON, George, Army-clothier, 32 Dartmouth-Str., Westminster 4. In POST-OFFICE LONDON DIRECTORY for 1823: WILSON, George, Army-clothier, 32 Dartmouth-Str., Westminster 5. In PIGOT & Co.'s LONDON COMMERCIAL DIRECTORY for 1823-4, Section on Army Clothiers. WILSON, Geo., 32 Dartmouth-st., Westminister 6. In KENT'S DIRECTORY OF LONDON, 1825. WILSON, Geo. army-clothier, 16, Queen-square, Westminster 7. In KENT'S DIRECTORY OF LONDON, 1826. WILSON, Geo. army-clothier, 16, Queen-square, Westminster 8. In KENT'S DIRECTORY OF LONDON, 1827. WILSON, Geo. army-clothier, 16, Queen-square, Westminster [note: It may be that Kent's used outdated information for the 1825-7 listings of George WILSON, as he shows up back at No. 16 Queen Square. George Wilson is not listed in the Post-Office directories for 1825, 1830, & 1832, nor in ROBSON's DIRECTORY of 1834. In fact ROBSON's 1834 directory lists a Wm ORD residing at No. 16 Queen Square, Westminster...which is not the Queen Square at Finsbury, Bloomsbury, or Aldersgate street. However, we do know that No 16 was a multi-family house, so perhaps there were still WILSONs living there ca 1831 & 1841...should we try those censuses?] There are some interesting, but possibly unrelated entries in earlier London directories (that do not show a George WILSON, army clothier): 1. In POST-OFFICE LONDON DIRECTORY for 1800: WILSON George, Mercht., 21 Upper Gower-street WILSON Robert, Wine Mercht. & Ship Insurance Broker, 22 Colchester-street, Savage-gardens 2. In POST-OFFICE LONDON DIRECTORY for 1805: WILSON George, Mercht., 21 Upper Gower-street 3. In POST-OFFICE LONDON DIRECTORY for 1810: WILSON & M'INERHENY, Agents, 1 James-street, Adelphi WILSON Robert, Mercht. & Agent, 12 Crescent & Minories 4. In POST-OFFICE LONDON DIRECTORY for 1813: WILSON & M'INERHENY, Agents, 1 James-street, Adelphi WILSON George, Baltic Broker, 6 Crosby-square WILSON Robert, Mercht. & Agent, Throgmorton-street 5. In POST-OFFICE LONDON DIRECTORY for 1814: WILSON & M'INERHENY, Agents, 1 James-street, Adelphi WILSON George, Russia Broker, 11 Great St. Helens WILSON Robert, Mercht. & Agent, Throgmorton-street --- From the census covering the St. Margaret's district of Westminster...1821 (there is also a fragment of 1801, but nothing to report from that section). On page 9 of the returns for the sub-district of Absey(?), parish of St. Margaret's, Westminster is the following: Robt. & Geo. WILSON, 2 families occupying the house, 2 families employed in trade, 4 males, 5 females, total of 9 persons. A mere thirteen entries prior to the WILSON entry in the 1821 census is the following: John FIDLER, 2 families occupying the house, 2 listed in the column "All other families" (which I don't yet understand) 2 males, 2 females, total of 4 persons. --- NOTE: This is the will for our Robert Wilson. The testament makes reference to two sons - George, and Frederick John. Furthermore, Robert was residing at 32 Dartmouth Street (just around the corner from 16 Queen Square, literally). Those two addresses were where George Wilson, Army Clothier, was listed in the various London Directories of the time. For a copy of the testament see the following site: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~slkarner/Robert_Wilson_Testament.pdf The PRO (UK) reference details for the will are: Catalogue Reference: PROB 11/1797 Dept Records of the Prerogative Court of Canterbury Class Prerogative Court of Canterbury and related Probate Jurisdictions: Will Registers Piece Name of Register: Tenterden Quire Numbers: 151 - 200 Date: 17 March 1832 Scope: Will of Robert Wilson of Saint Margaret Westminster , Middlesex Image Contains: 1 will of many for the catalogue reference | ||||||||||||||||||||

| For children baptisms, searched 1 Aug 1790 to 1 April 1803 in the following parishes: St Anne, Soho, London, England, UK [no appropriate PATERSON/FIDLER/WILSON entry] [720] St. Martin-in-the-Fields, London, England, UK [no appropriate PATERSON/FIDLER/WILSON entry] [722] St. James, Westminster, England, UK [no appropriate PATERSON/FIDLER entry] [723] -there was one interesting WILSON entry "28 Jan 1795: Robert Wilson son of Robert & Sarah (b. Dec ??)" [723] --- I have found something rather curious for a Robert WILSON...and if this one (of the bizzillion that were in London at that time) is ours, then there is an interesting possibility that may connect to the "banking" story, and to our William. KENTS 1801 directory lists a "Wilson, Rob. Ship & Insurance broker, 22 Colchester-st, Tower-hill". This, to me, is a business that may be "mis-interpretted" by younger generations as "banking". This is just a thought at the moment, though, and needs investigation. I have also noticed something else, that may well tie in with the George WILSON entry I wrote about in the letter (the army clothier at 16 Queen Square, Westminster). In fact, there are two curious entries I have found. One of these I don't think as highly of. The entries that I refer to are from HOLDEN'S triennial Directory for 1802, 1803, 1804: 1. Wilson, Robert, Irish linen merchant, 4 Bow church-yard 2. Wilson, Robert, taylor, 12 Little Russell st, Bloomsbury I "kind of" like the second entry as it is for a Robert WILSON in the area that we have the 1816 letter, the area that our Robert married Sarah FIDLER, and the area that our William PATERSON married Elizabeth FIDLER. Furthermore, his occupation of "taylor" (sic) ties in with the 1816 "army-clothier" entry for George WILSON at 16 Queen Square. | ||||||||||||||||||||
