Wyandot Chief Aug 3, 1903
MATHIAS BRAUN

Venerable Pioneer Citizen, Departs This Life at l2:55 o'Clock Friday Afternoon.

The venerable Mathias Braun, one of the oldest pioneer residents of Wyandot county, died at his home, corner of Findlay and Eighth streets, Friday afternoon at l2:55 o'clock. He was taken sick suddenly Thursday and had been in a critical condition from the first. Mr. Braun has lived for nearly fifty years within a stone's throw of St. Peter's church, of which he has always been a faithful and conscientious member. Soon after coming to Upper Sandusky from Hockenheim, Baden, Germany, Mr. Braun purchased the lot where his home now stands and had since lived within the shadows of stately St. Peter's church.

Mr. Braun was born in Hockenheim, Baden, Germany, February 6, 1818, being at the time of his demise in his eightysixth year. Early in life he learned the mason trade, thereby deviating from the vocation of his father, who was a farmer. In 1844 he married Barbara Altenberger, and eight years later with his family and others emigrated to the United States, arriving in New York from Antwerp, February, 1852. Mr. Braun and family came direct to Upper Sandusky, where he found work at his trade. Ever since coming here he had always been one of the most honored and respected citizens of the city of his adoption. His wife died October 15, 1856, leaving two children, Mrs. Elizabeth Brunner, of Findlay, and Martin, who died some time later. Mr. Braun was married again at Tiffin to Catherine Myer, September 4, 1857. To this union four children were born, Joseph, John, Catherine and Mrs. William Vogel. The second Mrs. Braun died June 25, 1886.

Funeral of Mathias Braun.

The funeral of the venerable Mathias Braun took place from St. Peter's church this morning at 8 o'clock and was conducted by Rev. Father Huthmacher. There were a great many beautiful floral offerings - tokens of the high respect in which the deceased was held in life. After the services the remains were laid to rest in the Catholic cemetery. The pallbearers were Casper Vogel, John B. Vogel, Henry Bastel, John N. Bentges, Fred Fritchie and George Keller.
