Family legend has that John Peterson was born in Sweden, and he came to America as a stowaway. He immigrated sometime around the turn of the century. He worked as a ship's rigger on the docks of New York City.
Mary Kurfis was born in Philadelphia. Her family moved to New York City when she was young.
John and Mary were married 2 Apr 1827 at Mariner's Church in New York City. They had five children. John died about 1854 when he fell from a ship's mast. After his death, his widow moved to Rockford, IL to be with her sons, who had moved there previously.
