A benefit of having mailing list gateways is that the archives of the mailing lists are available, and they are a great resource to be found by those who come along in the future. RootsWeb's founder, Brian Leverich, has archived newsgroup messages from before the time the lists were formed, and they are part of the searchable databases.

 There are other archives - at Deja and probably other places, but none is as complete. Search engines on RootsWeb have made it easy for us to retrieve what has been posted. That is going to include the good, the bad and the ugly, however, as newsgroups are anarchies and some participants sometimes behave badly. All told, though, the accumulated information is rather impressive.
