RATIONALE: soc.genealogy.slavic

There is a growing interest in Slavic genealogy on the Internet, as
evidenced by the discussions of Slavic genealogy that appear regularly
on other newsgroups, such as soc.genealogy.misc and alt.genealogy in
addition to several newsgroups in the "soc.culture" hierarchy.

Further, Slavic and, more generally, Eastern European, genealogy has
many unique elements not found in Western genealogy including
language, history, importance of genealogy, ethic/nationalistic
"rationalizations", sources and source availability.

We believe this is sufficient to justify the creation of an Slavic
newsgroup in the "soc.genealogy" hierarchy.

CHARTER: soc.genealogy.slavic

The soc.genealogy.slavic newsgroup will be open to discussion of all
aspects of Slavic genealogy. For the purposes of this group, "Slavic"
is considered to relate to Slavic-speaking people or cultures.
Specifically, these include:

Russia, Ukraine, Byelorussia, Ruthenia.
Poland, Czech, Slovakia, Lusatia (or Sorbs/Wends)
Bulgaria, Slovenia, Croatia, Macedonia, Dalmatia, Serbia.
IOW, Slavs on the Balkan peninsula.

Since Slavs migrated over a large territory and married into many
peoples and cultures, it is important that the group be able to
discuss these other areas. As such, discussions surrounding the rest
of Eastern Europe and the West as they relate to Slavs or slavic-held
records is encouraged.

It is hoped that soc.genealogy.slavic will provide a forum for the
discussion of Slavic genealogy which encompasses and links together
all of the diverse Slavic speaking cultures in both hemispheres and
allows for appreciation of the underlying similarities, as well as the
unique aspects, of all Ancient and Modern Slavic cultures in relation
to genealogical research.

Language shall not be restricted to English. Volunteer translators
will help out as needed.

All posts containing political or religous value statements are
strictly prohibited.

Subjects such as commercialism, software and other 'generic' genealogy
are best posted to the appropriate group unless the poster is not
proficient in the English language and needs to write in a different
language.

The exception to this rule will be "pointer" messages to the
appropriate group. For example, "18th C maps of the Ukraine: Please
see post in soc.genealogy.marketplace or drop me a note at
xxx@yyy.com" would be acceptable. This exception is made partly
because of the relative lack of materials available for slavic
genealogical studies.
