Anastasia was born at North East, Newfoundland. Baptized 5 Jul 1890, at Sacred Heart Parish, Placentia, by Rev. Michael A. Clancy, the daughter of Philip Summers & Ellen Houlihan. Sponsors were George Power & Margaret Ellen Power.
According to Anastasia, when she went to school the teacher was Mr. Powers (Wm. Joseph Power, the schoolmaster of Dunville, perhaps?). "He was very efficent, hard on the boys, but good to the girls", she said. He was Maggie McGrath's uncle. Maggie may have been Margaret Mary Power, born 5 Nov 1890 in Dunville, the daughter of Thomas Power and Margaret Hartigan and wife of Mr. McGrath. The Power family moved to Sydney, Nova Scotia.
From Fr. Jim Mason:
"The family supported their church, in part by selling their catch of June 29th, the feasts of Sts. Peter and Paul, and by giving the proceeds to the priest. They dutifully paid the pew dues at the beginning of the new year. The Summers name was on pew three on the Epistle side."
Anastasia & Bernard's son James wrote short stories about the life of
his mother's family in
Annie's Song
and his parents in
The Wedding
and in
Goodbye Old House
It is with Jim's permission, I print these stories.
Enjoy!
