Joseph 56, Barbara 54, and son Joseph 16, left Germany via Rotterdam about 29 July and arrived New York City 12 Aug 1893 aboard the SS Maasdam 2. By June 1900 they lived on Emslie St., when Joe, Sr. worked in a car shop and Joe, Jr. was employed as tool maker, In April of 1910 the family lived at 509 Broadway next to Walburga and Otto. Joe, Jr. was employed as a polisher. Both Carolina and Paulina had been born and life was quite good. Mom and Dad were in their 70s and probably enjoying their four granddaughters. Otto and Walburga also have a daughter named Pauline. No doubt the name Pauline or Paulina has a significant meaning to the family. America got involved in World War I on 6 April 1917. Joe, Jr. registered at the Draft Board while living at 358 William St. He was 42 and working as a self-employed grinder. It is doubtful that he served in the military. Jos Sr. and Barbara had passed away by January 1920, as they did not appear in the Census with Joe, Jr. and Caroline who were living on Jefferson Avenue. Joe was the keeper of a cutlery store. It is possible that he worked with his sister who was managing Otto Reuter Co. Their girls were 15 and 12 by then. The 1927 Buffalo Directories listed Joe as selling cutlery, barber supplies and doing janitorial work. The place of business was North Parade Avenue and the residence was Fillmore Avenue. Apparently he had started his own business. In April of 1930 Joe and Carolina owned an apartment building on North Fillmore Avenue worth $30,000. according to the Census. They rented 2 units and lived in the third. Joe was a custodian for a police station. The girls were gone and probably married. Joe, Jr. passed away before 1940 as the 1940 and 1941 Buffalo Directories listed App, Caroline (widow of Jos) r106 N. Parade. Carolina passed away in May of 1970. Their internment site is not known. A third child of Joseph and Barbara exists, although the name is unknown as of July 2008. On 4 October 1893 a female named App left Antwerp and arrived 18 Oct 1893 in Philadelphia aboard the SS Switzerland. Her age was not recorded and her first name appeared to be Miss Ona or Miss Oda App, accommodations 2nd class. The manifest page is barely legible. This may be the other child. Perhaps she was attending a University and she could not come with her parents, so she came 2 months later. |
