Born 13 Feb 1868 in Cat's Cove, (now Conception Harbour), Newfoundland, and
baptized 16 Feb 1868, by Rev. Patrick O'Donnell. Sponsors were Patrick Connell
and Catherine Curran. Ellen was the daughter of James Buck and Jane Curran.
Ellen's marriage to Philip Francis Butler took place at St. Peter & Paul RC Church, Harbour Main, Conception Bay (established 1853) part of the Diocese of Grand Falls, Harbour Grace by Rev. Patrick O'Donnell. Witnesses were John Moore & Annie Buck (sister of Ellen).
Of this
union, seven children were born, James L. in 1890; Patrick Leo on 12 Oct 1891, (killed in 1921 at Dominion Iron & Steel Works, Ltd, in Sydney);
John Frederick on 9 May 1896, (records show John Frederick, not John Francis as the family believed) married Jeanette; Steven in 1897 (did not marry);
Catherine Mary on 1 Jul 1898, married James Summers/Somers; Madeline (Johanna) on 20 Aug 1902, married William Parsons; and little Anne who died as an infant. Ellen is buried next to Philip at Holy Cross Cemetery,
Lackawanna, Erie Co., New York.
