George was born 28 November 1837 in Sherbrooke, Haldimand Co., Ontario, the son of Thomas and Laura (Root) Logan. He married Rachel Thomas on 13 April 1870 in Warwick, Lambton Co., Ontario. Rachel, born 13 June 1850, was the daughter of John and Elizabeth (Reece) Logan.

Ten children born of this union were: Thomas John 1871, married Margaret Thomas; Elizabeth Ann born 1873, married George Burnus Carrothers; Laura born 1874, married Robert Way; George, Jr.,born 1877, married Letta Arvilla Mabee; Mary Eliza born 1879, married Frank Olsen; Margaret Rachel. born 1881, married Henry Roden; Joshua Reece (aka J.R.) born 1883, married Myrtle Ann Chaffin; Albert Wellington, born 1886, married Laura Frazier; William Henry, born 1889, married Hazel Watson; and Julia, born 1891, married Thomas Codling.

During the Civil War, George enlisted in the First Michigan Engineers and Mechanics in 2 Oct 1861 as a carpenter. He re-enlisted as a volunteer on 10 February 1864. When he mustered out, he was described as a dark-haired, gray-eyed young man, 5'8" tall. His occupation was listed as a carpenter.

On 2 April 1870, only days before George married Rachel, he purchased 75 acres, the west 3/4 of Lot 8, Concession 7, Bargain & Sale #2491 in Bosanquet, Lambton Co. Ontario from George Hemet for $1150. On the property was a small two room log cabin. Thomas John Logan was the first born in the cabin in 1871. View the brick house completed in 1885. (photo from the 1980s) The first to be born in the new house was Albert in 1886. The property was sold to Thomas Clark on 28 June 1918 for $7000.00, Bargain & Sale #13763.

Sometime after 1891, the United States passed a law that pensions would not be paid to non-citizens. George was determined not to lose his pension, so he, Rachel and little Julia crossed the St. Clair River to Port Huron to live while they waited out the year of residence that was required before becoming a citizen. During that year, 21 year old John and George, age 15, ran the farm. Together Lizzie and Laura managed the household and looked after the younger children.

In June of 1893, George became an U.S. citizen, received his papers and returned to the farm with Rachel and Julia. The citizenship papers were hidden away, not to surface again until after the last of his children had passed away.

THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR

A military conflict between the United States of America (the Union) and the Confederate States of America (the Confederacy) from 1861 to 1865. The American Civil War is sometimes called the War between the states, the War of Rebellion, or the War for Southern Independence. It began on April 12, 1861 when the Confederate General P.G.T. Beauregard opened fire on Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor, South Carolina, and lasted until May 26, 1865, when the last Confederate army surrendered. The war took more than 600,000 lives, destroyed property valued at $5 billion, brought freedom to 4 million black slaves, and opened wounds that have not yet completely healed more than 125 years later.
