Greek Gyro (pronounced "yeé-ro") Sandwich Highly seasoned, but the yogurt sauce is a cooling compliment This recipe may be cut in half Makes 16 sandwiches Patties: 1 1/4 pounds lean ground beef 1 1/4 pounds lean ground lamb 1/4 cup oregano 1 1/2 tablespoons onion powder 1 tablespoon garlic powder 3/4 to 1 1/2 tablespoons freshly ground pepper 1 teaspoon thyme 3/4 teaspoon salt Yogurt Sauce: 1 cup plain yougurt 1/4 cup finely chopped seeded cucumber 1/4 cup finely chopped red onion 2 teaspoons virgin olive oil To taste, garlic powder, salt and freshly ground white pepper 8 large pita bread rounds, cut in half Thinly sliced red onion rings for garnish if desired Patties: Preheat broiler or barbecue. Combine ingredients lightly but thoroughly in large bowl. Shape into 16 patties and broil, turning once, until done as desired. Sauce: Combine first 4 ingredients in a bowl. Add garlic powder, salt and pepper to taste. Place 1 patty in each pita half and top with yogurt sauce and onion slices.
