Jeremiah was born on Sunday 20 July 1806, Gallatin, Columbia Co., New York, the son of Petrus (Peter) Hapeman and Margaretha (Margaret) Niver/Neifer. Baptized Gallatin Reformed Church, Gallatinville, N. Y. Sponsors were Jeremiah Burger and Maria Hauck. Jeremiah married C1826 Elizabeth Wemple, daughter of John B. Wemple and Mary Miller. Seven children were born of this marriage. Margaret; Ann E.; Benjamin; Eliza J; John W.; Nelson; and Elizabeth.

After Elizabeth passed away C1852, Jeremiah married Amelia Rickey who was born in Pennsylvania. There has been much speculation regarding the parents of Amelia. It is possible that her parents were Israel Rickey (1784-Bef. 17 July 1860) and Lydia Gilbert (1787-Aft. 17 July 1860) , but documentation has not been found in any public record. Eight children were born of this union. Charles H.; Peter James; Edward; Amanda; William; Andrew Jackson; George D.; and Libbey.

The death date for Amelia is not known. We only know she was listed in the Elmira City directory in 1898. The burial site for Elizabeth and Amelia is not known. Jeremiah passed away 20 December 1883 and is laid to rest at Bentley Creek Cemetery, Ridgebury, Bradford County, Pennsylvania. Previous to 1897 Bentley Creek Cemetery was called Baldwintown Cemetery. The land for the cemetery was donated by Isaac Baldwin.

Research Note:
The Bentley Creek Cemetery transcription on the Bradford County GenWeb
site lists the death year for Jeremiah as 1888
1883 is the correct year.
