PHILIP FRANCIS BUTLER
1864-1936

Philip Butler Philip, the son of Patrick Butler and Catherine O'Toole/Toole, of Salmon Cove, was born 13 Sep 1864, Salmonier-Holyrood, Conception Bay, Newfoundland. Baptized 16 Sep 1864 by the Rev. Patrick O'Donnell, at St. Peter & Paul RC Church, established 1853, Harbour Main, Conception Harbour, part of Diocese of Grand Falls, Harbour Grace. Sponsors were William Pennell & Ellen Pendergast.

His marriage to Ellen M. Buck in 1890 was performed by Rev. Patrick O'Donnell, witnessed by John Moore and Annie Buck.

About 1906 the family moved to Sydney, Nova Scotia so that Philip could look for employment. For a time Philip was employed as a 'Gandy Dancer' (railroad slang for men who maintained the tracks) for the Sydney and Louisbourg Railroad. In 1923 family moved again, but this time to Buffalo, New York, U.S.A. Philip was struck by a vehicle in 1936 while crossing the street, and died shortly after. He is buried next to Ellen in Holy Cross Cemetery, Lackawanna, Erie Co., New York.
