We regret to record the death of Mr Henry Knighton, late of Staveley, the event occurring suddenly on Wednesday night (26 December 1900) at Cheltenham, where for some time Mr Knighton had been residing. Up to seven years ago deceased was foundry manager for the Staveley Coal and Iron Company, and was greatly respected in Staveley and district. For some years he was a member of the Chesterfield Board of Guardians and was a regular attendant at the Saturday meetings in Chesterfield. A strong Churchman, for many years he held the post of Churchwarden. He was a Conservative in politics, and was connected with most of the local institutions in Staveley and district. Deceased was in his 67th year and was a widower. He leaves a grown up family of one son and three daughters. The funeral will take place on Monday (31st December) at the Staveley Cemetery, preceded by a service in Staveley Parish Church at 2 o clock.
The interment of the late Mr H Knighton took place at the New Cemetery, Staveley, on Monday afternoon. The body which reached Staveley from Cheltenham about 2 p.m. on the above mentioned day, was met at Sycamore House by the numerous relative and friends, was conveyed to the Parish Church, where a short choral service was held. From thence the mournful procession proceeded to the Cemetery, the blind along the route being drawn as a mark of the esteem in which the deceased was held. From the Cemetery gates the body was carried to the grave side by the following: Messrs J Gee, R Holmes, S Turner, A Cooper. H Peel (tenants), and E Thorpe (late tenant). The mourners were Mr T. W Knighton (son); Mrs C Mather, Mrs T Robinson, and Mrs L Knighton (daughters) Mr B Knighton (brother) Miss M Knighton, and Mrs Maynard (nieces) Mr G H Knighton (Derby), Mr G H Knighton (Barrowhill) Mr G Knighton (Brimington) and Mr W Knighton (Staveley) nephews: Mr C Mather and Mr T Robinson (sons in law), Mr T Jones (solicitor), Mr W Ridgway and Mr Pollard (executors), Mr G H Barlow (Staveley agent) Mr H Ackroyd (Leeds) Mr Toplis (Chesterfield) Mr T W Robinson, Mr T Cater and Mr P Walsh. Dr Court was unavoidably absent due to professional duties. Rev C H Molineux officiated at Church and the grave side.
