2.17.99 I
just had a new connection, which brought me a date of approximate birth for a Janet
McDonald born abt. 1780, on the Island of Mull. Janet McDonald married David Spence abt.
1801 on either Mull or Bowmore, Islay, Argyll, Sct. There eldest son, Daniel, was born at
Kilennan, Islay in 1802. Daniel and almost all of his siblings left Islay or Greenock for
Canada by the late 1830's to 1840's. Daniel's brother , Peter is Catherine Spence's
father.
Catherine Spence was married abt. 1867 in Greenock to Lachlan Beaton. Lachlan Beaton was
from Mull. His parents Malcolm Beaton & Marion McDonald were married abt. 1811 &
lived in the Kilninian & Kilmore area of Mull.
I also am waiting for information for who I believe are Lachlan Beaton's brother's &
Catherine Spence's Aunt's or Sisters:
Archibald Beaton who married Agnes Spence Dec. 21, 1841 in Greenock, Renfrew, Scotland
&
Allan Beaton who married a Janet Spence June 22, 1855, in the Middle or New parish of
Greenock.
It seems that those on Mull & Islay were run off the islands during the late 1830's.
Those who could not afford to leave directly from the islands, went for work in Greenock
or the area, till they had enough to pay for their families passage. I have been told,
that the some of the Spence's were loaned money by Lord Campbell so they could leave
directly from Islay to Canada.
If anyone has information on any of the names from above or even suggestions on where to
look next I would certainly appreciate it. Mostly, I am wondering if there is a connection
between Marion & Janet.
I hope that I did not confuse everyone with this triangle to much.
Thank you, Suzanne Beaton
3.1.99 I am still looking for
clues as to the uncles of Peter McDougall who preceded him to Canada, and settled most
likely in or around Minto Twp. in the area of Harriston in the Bruce Peninsula.
Peter was born or christened on the 4th of July 1824 - source: Gaelic McDougall family
bible. He was the third child born to John McDougall and Janet/Jessie McNab. Although his
older brother Duncan, and sister Anne show up in the records for Kildalton Parish, there
is nothing
for Peter. In letters from Scotland he is asked how the uncles are, but no names.
These letters were written shortly after Peter arrived in Canada c1854, so I
am assuming he most likely settled in the vicinity of the uncles. So somewhere out
there he had either McDougall or McNab relatives, or could they be further back - or
perhaps his wifes uncles?
He was married to a Mary McDonald, and her mother's name was Flora Livingstone. Does any
of this sound familiar? Best wishes Jean MacDougall
2.18.99 I'm looking for two
McDOUGALL girls. The first was Mary McDOUGALL, the wife of George KEITH. They may
have spent time in the Glasgow/Paisly area but were likely from Islay as their 1st
daughter Ann was married there in Bowmore to Dougall CAMPBELL on Nov. 21, 1829 according
to the OPR. Their second daughter, Catherine was born on Islay, according to the
certificate of her second marriage to William ROSE in King Twp.,
York Co. on July 14, 1864. (That marriage certificate gives her birth location as Islay,
names her parents and says that she was already a widow. She is said by descendants of her
ROSE step children to have been married the first time to Donald McLEOD on Isaly and
immigrated to Canada with him.)
The second girl was also Mary McDOUGALL. She was born on Islay, Nov. 6 1814 of
parents unknown. Her marriage notice in the Christian Guardian to Malcolm CURRIE on
Jan. 30, 1838 states that she was "of Thora", which is a township on the
east coast of Lake Simcoe, north of Toronto. I am looking for her parents in Thora or on
Islay.
Thanks for all your help, Malcolm CAMPBELL
2.19.99 Mary McDougall 1828
Kilmeny -1/6/1856 Port Ellen ) married Duncan McKerrell (27/10/1826-18/10/1893) 12/4/1847.
They had 4 children. She was the daughter of Neil McDougall and Mary/Margaret
Gillies who were married in 1811, Kilmeny, and had 8 children all born Kilmeny, i.e. Anne
b. 19/9/1813; Margaret b. 15/9/1818; Isabella b. 12/3/1822; John b.2/4/1827;
Hugh b. 18/11/1814; Catherine b. 19/9/1820; Helen b. 21/3/1824; Mary b. 1828.
Anne McDougall married to Angus Smith, farmer/weaver. Their son Hugh married Rosina
(Brown) McKerrell, 8/10/1872 Port Ellen.
Catherine McDougall 14/8/1823 Kilarrow-23/12/1897 Dennistown (daughter of John McDougall,
farmer and Catherine/Christine McLean) married Duncan McKerrell (his second marriage)
13/3/1857.
Hope that this helps someone, Art Hunter
