08 Mar 1998 - Luella Gilchrist - mailto:luella@telusplanet.net

My grandfather's people came from the island of Islay, we aren't sure if he
was born there or Ontario. They came out to Alberta (Islay, Alberta) to
farm but were very unsuccessful. I am not sure what his name was, my
brother will know. I think it was Donald. He had two sisters who never
married, we are not sure if he had a brother. He served in 2 world wars
and was a musician. We still have his antique Gibson mandolin. He died in
his eighties. He had 2 sons and 1 daughter. There was Donald and Charles
Douglas, my beloved father. Donald never married and was a strange person.
The daughter married a Gibson, and had 3 daughters a son. One daughter
died of encephalitis but the other cousins are still alive. My dad
married Jean Peters, they had 2 daughters and 2 sons. My little brother
died in 1970. My sister Carol is married and has a daughter and son, the
son is adopted. My brother Ed is married and has one son, Andrew. I was
married and have 3 sons, all of whom are brilliant and talented, naturally!

Going back to Duncan on the Isle of Islay, it is my feeling that he is
the child of Hugh Gilchrist and Janet McEachern.

22 Dec 1998 - Marg McLaughlin - mailto:msmclaughlin@bc.sympatico.ca

I have 2 lines of GILCHRISTs that go back to ISLAY.

In 1853 James GILCHRIST immigrated to Thorah township, Ontario county,
Ontario with his wife Mary Hunter and children Isabella, Donald, Florah,
Neil and Iarmeh. They had Ewen Hunter, Duncan, James and Esther after
settling in Ontario. Living with them at the time of the 1861 census
was Lauchlan Gilchrist, a labourer of 13 years who was born in
Scotland. James was a farmer.
James GILCHRIST and Mary Hunter were married January 21, 1841 in
Kildalton, Islay. I believe that James was the son of Donald Gilchrist
and Bell Cameron who were living in Taycarmagon when James was baptised
in 1803.
This is where the second GILCHRIST line comes in. Mary Hunter was the
daughter of Lachlan Hunter and Flora GILCHRIST. Lachlan and Flora were
married in Gleneigadale in 1810. Flora died in Glenaegadale in 1881 at
the age of 90. Her parents were Ronald GILCHRIST and Janet McCuaig. I
would love to hear from anyone who is researching the same lines.

Recently I have come across several interesting books related to
GILCHRIST families or the Isle of Islay. Would it be possible to
include on one of the GILCHRIST sites and the Islay site relevant
books or articles we might share and possible the source ie. whether
the book/article is available through interlibrary loan or where to
purchase the item?

Here are a couple of examples:

06 Feb 1999 - Nancy Thomson - mailto:nancythomson@funnybusiness.com

James MacNaughton Jr. of Queensbury, NY, will publish a new book on the
families who left Islay in 1738, 1739, and 1740 to eventually settle the
Argyle Patent in Washington Co., NY. The book will be ready in 2 to 3
months. If you're interested in a copy, write Jim at: 12 Morgan Dr.,
Queensbury, NY, 12804-9087. He does not have email. I just received a
copy of his earlier book, The MacNaughtons of Argyle, and it's fantastic!

Hi there, I am researching Donald Gilchrist b 1814 in Islay Scotland,
d July 30, 1908 in Ontario(i think). He married Mary McDougall b1823,
d Nov. 30, 1922 . Believe Donald immigrated to Canada circa 1849 and
settled in Township Fenlon, County of Victoria. He was the first
postmaster and named the office "Islay" after his home in Islay
Scotland. I think Mary immigrated to Canada from Scotland but not too
sure about that. I have found Donald in the 1871 census of Ontario
listed as a farmer. I am trying to trace him back to Scotland but
can't find him listed anywhere. Would like to find any info on his
ancestors. He was my husband's great grandfather. Hope you can help.
Thank you in advance, Doreen

26 Feb 2000 - Ann Gilchrest - Auburn, WA - mailto:AGilchrest@aol.com

I have two Gilchrist lines a paternal and a maternal line. Both lines came
from Islay in 1738 as part of the Argyle Patent in New York. One was
Alexander Gilchrist born in 1721, the other Duncan Gilchrist born between
1708 and 1711. Duncan was married before he came to Florence McAlister.
Alexander married in America. Have you come across any thing that might match?
