SAMUEL L. KARNS
Samuel L. Karns, first son of Philip J. Karns and Nancy Ann Ellinger Karns, was born 19 Sep 1840 in Fairfield Co., Ohio. He came to Warren Co., Illinois with his family in 1846.
With the outbreak of the Civil War, he answered the call to arms and enlisted,at age 20, at Abingdon, Illinois 22 Aug 1861 for a period of three years. He was mustered into Co. E 33rd Regiment of llinois Infantry Volunteers at Camp Butler near Springfield,Illinois 2 Sep 1861 as a Private.
The following is an account of the engagements in which the 33rd Illinois participated.
Big River Bridge, near Potosi, Mo. on 15 Oct 1861. Samuel was taken prisoner during this action, the Union suffering 40 casualties; 1 killed, 6 wounded and 33 captured. There were nine Confederate casualties; 5 killed and 4 wounded.  Samuel was released from capture on parole and was declared absent on furlough by General Curtis. He was subsequently discharged from service on 26 Nov 1861 by order of the War Department. Samuel re-enrolled at Greenbush, Illinois 4 Mar 1862.
Bayou Cache, Ark. 7 Jul 1862. The Union Army suffered 64 casualties; 7 killed and 57 wounded. The Confederates lost 10 killed and 200 wounded.
Boh Landing, Miss. 14 Sep 1862.
Port Gibson, Miss. 1 May 1863. The Union Army lost 130 killed and 718 wounded while the Confederate Army lost 1150 killed and wounded with 500 missing.
Champion Hills, Miss. 16 May 1863. The Union Army lost 426 killed, 1842 wounded and 180 missing.
Big Black River Bridge, Miss. 17 May 1863. There were 13 wounded.
Vicksburg, Miss. 19 May 1863. In skirmishes on 20 & 21 May 1863. In the charge on Vicksburg on 22 May 1863, there were 13 killed and 59 wounded. Samuel was one of the wounded and was hospitalized in Memphis, Tenn. 1 Jun 1863.
According to one account:
Another major part of the assault also fell once again upon the XIII Corps. W. P. Benton's brigade, which had done good work at Port Gibson, and which included
the 8th and 18th Indiana and the 33rd and 99th Illinois, mounted a fine attack near the right of  McClernand's line, at the point where the Jackson to Vicksburg railroad cut ran transverse  through the Union Line. As the charge progressed, however, the men of the 33rd, leading the assault, were slowed by fallen strands of telegraph wire which lay in the deep grass. The momentum of the forward movement was slowed, and the brigade only managed to reach the ditches below the Confederate forts, from which it could go no farther. Most of the men of the 33rd were forced to stay in the ditches all day - from ten o'clock in the morning until seven or eight o'clock at night - while Confederate troops above them threw lighted shells down the escarpment. The Union soldiers were virtually unable to return the fire except by raising their rifles above the ditch and shooting blindly. It would be difficult to find a worse predicament than that in which the 33rd Illinois found itself  on the morning of May 22. Among the 32 men of E Company who made the initial charge, only one was able to return at the end of the day unmarked. In that company, recruited in western Illinois, bravery was a common characteristic however.  Private Parmenas Hill of La Moille, for  example, though fatally wounded in the leg, joked pluckily to his stretched bearers, " Now I can go home and make stump speeches".
Samuel was ordered on furlough by Major General Grant from 27 Jul to 26 Aug 1863.
Fort Esperanza, Texas 27 & 28 Nov 1863. The Union Army had 1 killed and 2 wounded. The Confederates suffered 1 killed. This was apparently the last engagement in which Samuel paticipated.
Samuel was discharged 31 Dec 1863 for reason of re-enlistment. He re-enlisted at Indianola, Texas as a veteran on 1 Jan 1864 for a period of three years.
Samuel was reported as being sick in the general hospital in New Orleans from 23 Oct 1864 to Mar 1865. He was sent home sick on furlough in Nov 1864 where he was treated by Dr. William Randall, a physician and surgeon in Greenbush, Illinois. From furlough, he returned to the hospital in New Orleans.
Samuel was mustered out of the service 24 Nov 1865 at Vicksburg, Miss. and returned to his old organization in Abingdon, Illinois.
Samuel was killed in a hunting accident in Shokokon, Henderson Co., Il on 1 Nov 1874. His widow, Edwina, later married Dr. William Randall, the physician who cared for her former husband during the Civil War. He died 23 Oct 1888 and she applied for a Civil War widow's pension 19 Oct 1916. She died 17 Oct 1919.

Ingerson Esq. to hold an inquest over the body of Samuel Carnes found dead at Shokokon in Henderson County State of Illinois, after examining all the evidence and all the circumstances, believe without a shadow of doubt that the said Samuel Carnes came to his death by the accidental discharge of a double barrel shot gun caused by himself and that we found a pocket book about his person containing fifty nine and 73/100 Dollars in currency and some papers.
