| Participation in Stokes Discussion Lists: There are two groups of Stokes researchers sharing information through discussion "lists". These are shown below. Many of us participate in both. To send messages to everyone on a list you must first subscribe to it, as described below. You will then receive all messages unless you request mail restrictions. You remove yourself from a list by simply replacing the word "subscribe" with the word "unsubscribe" in the instructions below. Your subscription is for your e-mail account, so a change in e-mail addresses requires subscribing from the new e-mail address. |

| To join Rootsweb's Stokes Discussion "List": Either 1) send message with text "subscribe" to or 2) go to: http://www.rootsweb.com/~maillist/surnames/index.html and, then after subscribing (for free), send messages to this
list with: and, you can also Search Archives of STOKES-L |

Several bulletin boards are dedicated to Stokes data. The GenForum bulletin board displayes messages in reverse chronological order (most recent first) and you can proceed backwards page-by-page as far as you desire. RootsWeb bulletin boards are in the same order and will display much more material without the user having to "page forward"; but, the default setting to display only recent input, typically only that from the past month. Fortunately, it also displays a "message index" that allows the user to change display settings to allow it to include earlier input (changing from "month" to "year" or even more). Other variables/delimiters can also be set here. http://genforum.familytreemaker.com/stokes/ http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/surnames/sto/Stokes http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/index/Surnames/S.html

| NOTES: 1.
The purpose of this page/site is the identification 2. The purpose of this page can be fulfilled without infringement of copyrights, which would also be a violation of the rules of the host. Anyone considering reproduction of material published or posted by others may want to first take a look at restrictions shown at: http://www.loc.gov/copyright/ 3. If you want to post your family tree to this site and do not have it in a form you consider to be suitable, send us a message and we can make arrangements to make the conversion. Free software is available that does a beautiful job of converting GEDs to web pages. You should be able to export a GED file from any genealogical software you are using. 4. From the perspective of the writer, scholarship and intellectual maturity in our quest for Stokes history are advanced considerably when current researchers dig into original source documents and critically examine information, assumptions, and conclusions presented and/or published by others. This may be uncomfortable for some who would prefer to accept published texts and family traditions without question, but it is hoped that we can disagree without being disagreeable and agree that truth is most likely to emerge when there is a critical examination of all data presented. -- Cecil Stokes |
