Stokes
by Jackie
Foster, to whom all questions and additions to this material should
be addressed.
For almost seven hundred years,
a direct line of decent can be traced for the Stokes family. There are
references to an earlier member of the family, but his exact relationship
is unknown. The earliest known member of the family was Petro de Stoko
-- note the varient spelling -- who witnessed two charters of King John
in 1201 and 1206. The family is of Norman origin, and it has
been claimed to be a branch of the apparently extinct Montespedan family.
This family is post-Conquest, that is, they migrated to England after the
Norman invasion in 1066. After their migration, they gained both honors
and possessions.
The earliest person to which a line
of decent can be traced is Sir Adam de Stokke, who was first mentioned
in records in the year 1301. Sir Adam was shown to hold, in a record dated
1312, possession of two manors in Wiltshire. There was or is an effigy
of Sir Adam in full armor, and this effigy had its legs crossed, which
was the symbol of a Crusader. Considering the time period in which Sir
Adam is known to have lived, it would appear that his most likely service
would have been in the Eighth Crusade in 1270. Little was accomplished
in this Crusade as the leader, St. Louis (the IX) King of France (1226-1270)
died shortly after landing. It would appear to be unlikely that Sir Adam
would have served later than this for the following reasons:
1. The family
was indicated as being in England for some time prior to this individual,
this excludes residence in a Crusader State.
2. Acre fell
in 1291, thus ending the Crusades. This information would show Sir Adam
at about fifty in 1301.
In 1623, the Stokes family registered
a pedigree with the College of Herald's and were confirmed in the arms
used and held in prior times by the family. 1. Sir Adam de Stokke, first
mentioned in 1301, married Eva_, residence in Wiltshire. 2. Thomas Stoke,
during the reign of Edward III, residence in Seend, Wiltshire. 3. Thomas
Stokes (2) during the fifth year of the reign of Richard II (1381), residence
in Seend, Wiltshire. 4. John Stokes, during the reign of Henry IV, residence
in Seend, Wiltshire. 5. Thomas Stokes (3), during the reign of Henry V,
residence in Seend, Wiltshire. 6. John Stokes (2), during the reign
of Henry VI, in the third year, (1425), residence in Seend, Wiltshire.
7.Thomas Stokes (4), in the eleventh year of the reign of Henry VII
(1495), residence in Seend, Wiltshire. 8. John Stokes (3), married Alice
__ , erected the chapel at Seend, Wiltshire, buried there in 1498, his
wife is also buried there. 9. John Stokys(sic)(4), married Margery Nicholas,
daughter of JohnNicholas of Rundwire, Wiltshire, residence in Seend, Wiltshire
10. Christopher Stokes, married Anne Lester of Christian Malford, Wiltshire,
the family residence was moved during this time from Seend, Wiltshire to
Stanshaws Place later Stanshaws Court. 11. Anthony Stokes, married Margaret
Scrope, daughter of Richard Scrope of Castle Comb, Wiltshire, no issue.
Next he married Jane Browning, daughter of Richard Browning, of Coaley,
Gloucesterchire 12. Christopher Stokes (2), married Alice Parker, daughter
of John Parker of Barnwood. Next he married Barbera Snell daughter of Sir
Thomas Snell. At this point , we depart from the heads of the Stokes family
and trace a younger son of Christopher Stokes (2) and his move to the new
world.

The Stokes Family Genealogy (1301-1979) and other allied families
By Edmond L. Contreras Original material collected and arranged by:Martha
Virginia Benge Stokes, Fern Virginia Stokes Eller, and Lynn Almon Stokes
finished 11 May 1979. Martha Virginia Benge
Stokes first compiled a Stokes genealogy between the years of 1946 and
1956. Her material did not go beyond the time of Christopher Stokes (3)
who was first known to be in the colony of Virginia in 1629. From this
point, she proceeded on what now appears to be the false premise
that the family herein described, descended through William Stokes eldest
son John and the Montford-Stokes line. It is thanks to her son Lynn A.
Stokes that the proper line was found, though lacking in confirmation,
he showed me compelling evidence that the proper sequence should be through
William's second son, Sylvanus. I later found in some material, herein
included, obtained from my grandmother Anna Fay Stokes Tummons, that Great-Grandmother
Stokes found information from the Caswell County, North Carolina
1790 census records, but failed to include it in her genealogy prior to
her death in November of 1960. Signed, Edmund L. Contreras. Her text
as follows:
John Stokes, Born Brunswick Co., Virginia, April 1764. Believed
to be the son of Sylvanus Stokes because Sylvanus
was the only Stokes listed in 1790 census from Caswell Co., North Carolina
and connection of the Sylvanus Stokes family Brunswick Co., Virginia. Believed
Sylvanus Stokes to be the son of young Charles? Stokes, Brunswick Co.,
Virginia but not proved yet. Sylvanus Stokes married Sara Allen 1758. We
have proved that John Stokes was not the son of William Stokes of Elbert
Co., Georgia by obtain the will of William Stokes. John Stokes and his
uncles David, Allen, Henry, William went to North Carolina then to Elbert
Co., Georgia, the later were found in Southern Co., of Kentucky. John Stokes
went to Graves Co., Kentucky where he died about 1840. The John Stokes
Family lived in Tenn. a few years where his son was married to Mary Robberson.
Three daughters Betsy, Eliza, Lucinda.

man with a neatly trimmed beard. He served four years in the army during
the Civil War. He married Rebecca Montgomery in Polk County, Missouri.
They were the parents of two sons and three daughters. For all of his life,
Russell had great respect for his Grandmother Robberson's wisdom. He died

Missouri. WILLIAM: The second child, was born in 1823, in Bedford County,
Tennessee. In 1850 he was living at home and driving a stage coach between
Springfield and Rolla. He married Nancy Creed in the late 1850's. They
were the parents of three sons and two daughters. In later life, William

the parents of six sons and three daughters. Richard was a slim man, though
not as tall as his brothers, with hazel eyes, black hair, and a long beard.
During the Civil War he hauled freight at various times for both sides.
A story has been handed down that at one time during the war while he was
hauling for the Union Army, he was stopped by a Confederate unit, and that
he told them to take anything they wanted but not to damage the wagon,
he was left after they took only enough for a good meal. Emmaline was a
