Andrew STOKES who died 16 Oct 1838 in Duplin Co NC. Andrew's daughter Sarah was my ancestor. Andrew's father may have been named William. Sorry, but the above is all I have on Andrew STOKES, other than he may have used the spelling of STOAKES. Van Turner
Annie M. STOKES, my grandmother, was born in either Bradford, Stark County, IL, USA, or Kensington, England, circa 1885, according to conflicting secondary sources. Her death certificate in BC, Canada, states parents names as Robert and Margaret STOKES. I would like to discover mother's maiden name and sibblings. Thanks. Ben Whiting

Submitted by James E. Hargraves,
David Pliney Stokes. Would love to hear from anyone who might know the parents etc

Elmer Stokes I want to add the ancestry of my uncle, Elmer Stokes to my database. Elmer was not his real name first name. Uncle stokes was a very nice man. He was married to my Aunt Eilene/Eileen Clause. Aunt Eilene said that Uncle Stokes family was from around East Feliciana Parish, Louisiana. (A book was published about this family, and Uncle Stokes was in it, but I don't remember the name of the book, nor his first name). Uncle Stokes (as I knew him) drove a school bus in Elmer, Louisiana. He and Aunt Eilene had 4 children. Nicky (Nicholas ?) was killed when his car stuck a tree on Christmas eve..(This happened several years ago. Among the first cousins that I remember, Nicky was the first to go. He was so bashful, and yet so very nice.. I guess God needed more nice people up there, but we would have liked to have had him around a little longer). I won't name the others because they are still living, but if they happen to be monitoring this and see my message, I would welcome any communication from them!

Noah Stokes, born 1798 in Maryland and died 1882 in Hancock Co. Illinois? I know some about Noah's years in Illinois but I am interested in his Maryland origins. The "History of Hancock Co. Illinois", Th. Gregg, Chicago: Chas. C. Chapman Publishing (1880), has the following information about Noah:
"Noah Stokes, retired farmer, came here in 1838, when there was only one house between his present home and Warsaw. He is a native of Caroline County, on the eastern shore of Maryland, where he was born in 1798. His parents were also natives of Maryland. His father, William, was born in 1757. His mother, Sarah Cohee, was born in 1760. After he obtained his majority he went to Chester County, Pa., where he lived till 1838, and then emigrated to Illinois, near where he now lives. He was married to Mary Willson (sic) in 1819, who was born in Pennsylvania in 1799. Ten children have been born to them, only 3 of whom are living; viz., Ruthanna (Jones), with whom he now lives, Emma (Jackson) and Harriett (Cox). Although "Grandpa" is 82 years old he still possesses a strong memory. He is a man who has been and is yet firm in his opinions on all subjects. About two years since he lost his sight entirely. He has always been a Democrat." I'd appreciate any suggestions or informations you might have about Noah Stokes and his parents from Maryland. Thanks, .
John Arthur
Oscar or Asker Stokes.. Was in Coshocton County, Ohio sometime between 1893 and 1910. There are three birth listings for children to Oscar and Lela Florence Rivers Stokes during this period of time... the first birth was in March of 1893, another was in 1895, not sure of the date on the third one at this time. I have been told my some family members that Oscar was a large colored man who worked in the local coal mines.. Have not been able to find out anything else about him..eg. birth, death or where either occurred. Nancy Murray

Notes:

1. Please limit submittals to the MOST wanted one or two per your household to keep page at a manageable size.

2. Please restrict "index section" words to those that fill no more than two lines per cell (sometimes difficult to predict).

3. Please limit text section to essential five or six lines (including name line). Some items now displayed are really too long. Others will be recaptured on next revision or when feedback is received.

4. This is still exploratory; so, please review data for needed changes, review page for page improvements, send ideas for improvement, and maintain patience. This is still not smooth enough for long-term maintenance.

5. Send inputs to CStokes@HiWAAY.net with a subject starting with "SMWL" (without quotes). Try to put basic information in the order and limited length to be used in the summary table, with a few lines of added text if desired. This is not just a desire, it is the type protocol that is necessary to make this a practical undertaking until we can get something mechanized.

6. Expect inclusion of inputs at next monthly update. (Yes, more often would be nice, but getting into it takes a bit of time.)
