Stover PipeLine #8,
December, 1976
Dear Clayton Descendants,
The enclosed is the first 'installment' of a Joseph Clayton biography. After arranging the information I have in chronological order, some things became more clear, and also, the gaps in information became pretty clear.
I wonder if any of you could provide more information for the second (of two) 'installment.' ??
Joe bought Aunt Clara's and Aunt Angeline's 40 Acre tracts of the NW quarter of section 26 and lived on Rosalie's 40 acres. The remaining 40 acres belonged to A.L. Ewer; which 40 acres was that? SE? NE?
Rose Hill School was on the Clayton farm... where? South of the home and on the SW corner of the SW quarter section?
Any more about Rose Hill? Did Gram May teach there? Did she attend school there? Did everyone in Cedar attend school there? Were "Major's" and "Cedar" the same communities? "Cedar" is the name of the Township; "Majors" was the name of the Post Office, Church, and Cemetery. Where did the name "Majors" come from?
S.G. Higgins, son of Ellen Ewer and Sam Higgins, had a blacksmith shop "down the road on the Clayton place." Down the road which way?.. East toward Cedar Creek across from A.L. Ewer? Or, down the road south towards A.J. Stovers quarter section?
When did Joe Clayton move to Poole? Before Rosy died in 1913? Did he build his Poole house himself? Who built the house that Bert and May lived in?
When did Joe and Keith visit Ernest and Ruth in Washington? Ernest and Ruth said that Joe traveled into Canada to visit with some Ohio friends; when was that?
Any recollections about the 1890's or early 1900's to share?
Thanks so much to those who have written with the old "goodies" that I really like to get. If your version of some story isn't the same as I've written it, please let me know! Please point out anything you may disagree with, too!
When was Biographical Souvenir written? I'm assuming that the information in it was gathered by interviews taken in the early 1890's.
Hope to hear from you!
