My Schell Collection
The Official Name Change

In 1918, or possibly before, (I haven't had a chance to check too much further at this time) the Schittkowski family decided they were tired of having their name pronounced like anything but what it should be pronounced as. So they made up their mind to change the name, to "Americanize" the name.

I don't know if it was a single decision made by Frederich, patriarch of the family, or if it was a group decision. However it came about, it was decided that it was time to do the deed.

The name they chose was "Schell". Plain enough, but I'm not sure about the "Americanized" part. But that was their choice. Below are images of the original documents that I was able to make copies of. Clicking on the smaller image will take you to a larger image on another page.
