Cemeteries
Punt Flat Cemetery

The first cemetery in Bairnsdale was at Punt Flat, now within the boundaries of the Mitchell  Gardens Caravan Park. It operated at least in the 1850s and early 1860s. There are no formal records, some burials are listed in East Gippsland Cemeteries.

Lucknow Cemetery
A private cemetery existed on Lucknow Station, near the current headstone of Eliza Ann Archer     (died 1847) in Crooke Street, East Bairnsdale. The last known burial there was in 1873. There    are no known formal records.

Bairnsdale Cemetery
The Bairnsdale Cemetery reserve was gazetted in 1863, the earliest headstone is from 1865 and records date from 29 May 1871. The cemetery is administered by a trust and genealogical enquiries are handled by the East Gippsland Family History Group. Written enquiries are carried out in return for their research fee and personal callers can view the cemetery records at their research centre on payment of the day research fee. The headstones have been transcribed to 1920 and are held at the GSV, SAG, EGFHG, EGHS and SFHG. A cemetery walk, Monumental Memories: Bairnsdale Cemetery, has been published, and includes details over over a hundred headstones.

Church Records
Anglican -Baptisms 1867-1988, burials 1931-1988, Marriages 1886-1988 held at EGFHG on microfilm. Presbyterian see Stratford

Courts
Bairnsdale Court of Insolvency Records (1853-1858) 11 volumes (VPRS 810) are held at the Public Record Office.

District Land Office
The Outward Letter Book and memorandum Book (1865-1870) 2 volumes (VPRS 1654) and Correspondence Register (1874-1888) 3 volumes (VPRS 1657) are held at the Public Record Office.

Funeral Directors
The EGFHG holds the records of G. H. Vickers from 1904 to the early 1950s, with an index.
The longest established firm of funeral directors in Bairnsdale is H. W. Baggs and Son, who commenced in the 1962, and do not have records prior to that date. They ask that you understand that if you approach them for information they believe their first responsibility is, to protect the privacy and confidentiality of families and may act accordingly. They will however assist as much as possible. No other funeral director's records are known for the Shire of East Gippsland.

Booklist: To obtain a copy of their list of publications for sale, forward a business-sized SSAE.
Description: The Society is housed in a historic, doublestorey building that is over a hundred years old. The collection includes machinery and household items, and there are also a number of historic buildings that have been relocated to the site and restored. The Research Centre includes a large collection of photographs and has major holdings of newspaper on microfilm.

Keeping Place
A Koorie Keeping Place operates in 37-53 Dalmahoy Street, Bairnsdale, ((03) 5152 1891) and is the first point of call for information about Aboriginal forebears.

Latter Day Saints
The Latter Day Saints Church has a reading room in Bairnsdale, which is open 10am-2pm Tues & Thurs, 7pm-9pm Wed. While it does not hold any local records, it may be that your discoveries necessitate a quick check of records on the CD-Rom, or other records, when no other repository is open. They are located at Robb Street and bookings for use of the CD-Rom or microfiche/microfilm readers must be made beforehand on (03) 5155 4033.

Parish Maps
Most land from an area between Stratford and Lindenow South to the NSW border is administered by the (DCNR) Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, whose head office for the region is at 7 Service St, Bairnsdale, phone (03) 5151 0420. The remaining area (which includes Dargo) is administered from the office at Traralgon, 108-116 Franklin St, Traralgon, phone (03) 5172 2111. Both offices have extensive collections of parish maps for their own areas, but an appointment to view them may avoid disappointment.

The East Gippsland Family History Group also has an extensive parish plan collection for the whole area and elsewhere in Victoria. The East Gippsland Historical Society has an extensive collection for the area around Bairnsdale.

Schools
A school, registered No. 754, opened 1864 and remains open. School records 1864-1972 (but probably not the registers) are held at the PRO: VPRS 6357. Various attendance records 1878-1912 (but patchy in early years) held at EGHS. A number of private schools have operated in the town and records have not been located for any of these, which have closed.

War Memorials and Honour Rolls
The main cenotaph is in Main Street, for World Wars I and II. A Boer War memorial for all Gippsland can be found across the street from it. A transcript of the Boer War memorial can be found by clicking  HERE. Beaufort Gardens, Princes Highway, and a war cemetery adjacent to the Bairnsdale Cemetery record local deaths at the air base during World War II. A World War I memorial to members of the Bairnsdale Rowing Club, once on the bank of the Mitchell River, is now adjacent to the courthouse.

The East Gippsland Historical Society has a room which features the World War I Honour Roll for the Bairnsdale Shire, the Australian Native's Association, St Andrew's Presbyterian Church and the Mitchell Lodge for both wars plus a number of other district rolls.

Transcripts of the Bairnsdale Boer War, Shire of Bairnsdale WWI Honour Roll, St Andrew's Presbyterian Church WWI (KIA and returned) and Wesley Methodist Church WWI (KIA and returned) Honour Rolls are held at EGFHG.

Bellbird Creek
Locality on the Princes Highway west of Cann River, mainly known for its wayside hotel.

Lower Bemm
A school, registered No. 4594, opened 1941 and closed 1942. The records have not at this stage been identified.

Upper Bemm River
A school, registered No. 3997, opened 1920s and closed c. 930. The records have not at this stage been identified.

Benambra
The records of the Benambra Cemetery date from 1888 (apart from one record in 1877), the earliest headstone is dated 1888 and the reserve was gazetted in 1910. Headstones (to 1978) and records (to 1980) are held at the EGFHG, EGHS, GSV and SAG. The cemetery is administered by a trust. The secretary is Alan Douglas, Hollands Road, Benambra 3900.

Police Records: The Bailiff's Warrant Book (1879-1954) and Aliens Register (1940-1941) are held at the Victoria Police Historical Unit.

A school, registered No. 1746, opened 1876 and remains open. It was originally known as Omeo Plains, and names of pupils 1876-1900 are published in Pioneers of the Omeo District by Jane Vince Pendergast.

War Memorial: There is an obelisk in Main Street next to the hall for World Wars I and II, and memorial gates at the recreation reserve for World War II and Korea. For transcripts of the war memorials, click HERE.

Bendoc
A cemetery operated for a time at Bendoc, although no records have been located and no headstones exist. It was gazetted in 1892, although at least one burial is known to have occurred earlier, in January 1889. The cemetery trust ceased to exist in 1923.

Police Records: The Occurrence Book (1886-1900, 1916-1960), Watch-house Charge Book (1869-1996), Summons Book (1865-1972) and Court Register Book (3 volumes) (1897-1919) are held at the Victoria Police Historical Unit.

A school, registered No. 1166, opened 1873 and closed at the end of the 1980s.

Bendoc Lower
A school, registered No. 3267, opened 1896 and closed 1956. The records have not at this stage been identified.

North Bendoc
A school, registered No. 3801, opened 1913 and closed 1941. The records have not at this stage been identified.

Bengworden
A school, registered No. 1863, opened 1877 and closed 1965. The records c. 1905-1965 are held at EGFHG.

Bete Bolong South (Pumpkin Point)
A school, registered No. 3173, opened 1912 and closed 1952. The records have not at this stage been identified.

Bindi (near Swifts Creek)
A school, registered No. 2980, opened 1890 and closed 1943. The records have not at this stage been identified.

A school, registered No. 2554, opened 1883 and closed 1914. The records have not at this stage been identified.

Black Mountain (north of Butchers Ridge)
A private cemetery, containing only members of the O'Rourke family, from the 1850s to 1870s, exists on private property.

Boggy Creek (Bruthen/Buchan Rd)
A school, registered No. 3740, opened 1912 and closed c. 914. The only pupils are believed to be from the Wyatt family.

Boggy Creek (near Bullumwaal)
Also known as Allenvale, Five Mile Creek and Middle Boggy Creek. Mining field from the mid 1860s.

Boggy Creek Lower (later Flaggy Creek) (near Calulu)
A school, registered No. 3453, opened 1903 and closed 1969. The records have not at this stage been identified. See also entry for Calulu. A transcript of the school WWI Honour Board is held at EGFHG.

Upper Boggy Creek (probably near the intersection of Mia Mia Road and the Bullumwaal Road)
A school, registered No. 2459, opened 1882 and closed 1892. The records have not at this stage been identified.

Bonang
Two private cemeteries for members of the Bryant and Marriott families are on private property.

A school, registered No. 2808, opened 1987 and was open in 1970, but has since closed.

Boole Poole (adjacent Lake Victoria)
A school, registered No. 2797, opened 1886 and closed 1889. The records for 1919 (when it was a branch of Paynesville), held at EGFHG.

Boulder Flat (see also Buldah) (north of Cann River)
A school, registered No. 3813, opened 1913 and closed 1927. The records have not at this stage been identified.

Brandy Creek
Mining area near Cobungra

Broadlands (Mitchell River) (east of Bairnsdale)
A school, registered No. 2487, opened 1883 and closed 1894. The records have not at this stage been identified.

Brodribb (near Orbost)
A school, registered No. 3635, opened 1910 and closed 1965. The records have not at this stage been identified.

Brookville (near Cassilis)
Also known as Sheepstation Creek, Scotch Hollow, Gum Forest. A school, registered No. 3327, opened 1899 and closed in the 1940s. The records have not at this stage been identified.

The cemetery reserve was gazetted in 1883, records date from 1897 and the earliest headstone is dated 1883. Headstones (to 1980) have been transcribed and are held at EGFHG, EGHS, GSV and SAG. The cemetery is still in use and is administered by a trust.

Some records of St Matthew's Anglican Church and the Bruthen Congregational Church are held at EGFHG and EGHS.

Police Records: The Watchhouse Charge Book (1891-1969) is held at the Victoria Police Historical Unit.

A school, registered No. 1141, opened 1872 and remains open. Records (date range not stated, but substantial) held at EGFHG. The school does not have the resources to undertake written enquiries about the registers. The names of students and the occupations of their parents from the first school register (1872-1891) were published in 1141 Bruthen: the first hundred years.

There is a war memorial in Main Street for World Wars I and II. For transcripts of the memorial, click HERE. A transcript, apparently only of names of those who died, is held at EGFHG.

Bruthen South
A school, registered No. 1946, opened 1878 and closed 1881. The records have not at this stage been identified.

Buchan
The cemetery reserve was gazetted in 1885, records date from 1960 (as earlier records were destroyed in a fire) and the earliest headstone is dated 1887. Headstones (to 1980) have been transcribed and are held at EGFHG, EGHS, GSV and SAG. The cemetery is still in use and is administered by a trust.

A school, registered No. 1905, opened 1878 and remains open. Names of pupils and their parents 1914-1977 were published in A brief history of Buchan District and Schools prepared for the Buchan School Centenary.

War Memorials: A transcript of a list of those from the district (KIA and returned) from WWI, WWII and Vietnam, as published elsewhere, is held at EGFHG.

Buchan East
A school, registered No. 380, opened 1914 and closed 1962. Names of pupils and their parents 1919-1962 were published in A brief history of Buchan District and Schools prepared for the Buchan School Centenary. The original registers are held at the PRO.

Buchan South
A school, registered No. 3256, opened 1896 and closed some time after 1977. The original registers are held at the PRO.

Buldah (See also Boulder Flat)
A school, registered No. 4555, opened 1936 and closed 1941. The records have not at this stage been identified.

Bullumwaal
The 'Old Cemetery' reserve was gazetted in 1884, the earliest headstone is dated 1877 and the last burial is believed to have occurred about 1899. Records were published in Gippsland Heritage Journal No 10, pp56-57.

The 'New Cemetery' reserve was gazetted in 1899. The earliest headstone is dated 1905 and the last known burial took place c. 937. Headstones and some records were published in East Gippsland Cemeteries and Bullumwaal: Some Memories and a different version of the records 1899-1902 were published in Gippsland Heritage Journal No. 10, pp56-57.

Butchers Ridge
A school registered No. 3239, opened 1895 and closed in 1972. The original registers are held at the PRO.

Cabanandra (near Bendoc)
A school, registered No. 3486, opened 1905 and closed 1952. The records 1939-1948 are held at EGFHG, and school records 1940-1949 are held at the PRO: VPRS 6507.

CabbageTree (also known as CabbageTree Creek and Cabbage Palm Creek)
A school, registered No. 3812, opened 1913 and closed in the late 1980s.

Calulu
A school, registered No. 1821, opened 1876 and closed 1973. The records 1914-1973, inc. students who commenced from 1906 held at EGFHG. Some school records (1906-1973) are held at the PRO: VPRS 6389. The PRO also holds some records (1914-1960) for 'Lower Boggy Creek 1821', VPRS 6506.

A transcript of the WWI school honour board (KIA and returned), currently in the Wy Yung hall, is held at EGFHG.

Cann River
The cemetery reserve was gazetted in 1910, records date from 1928 and the earliest headstone is dated 1924. There are eleven unmarked graves from the pre-1928 period, of which details are not known. Headstones (to 1984) have been transcribed and are held at EGFHG, SFHG, GSV and SAG. The cemetery is still in use and is administered by a trust.

Historical Society

Description: The Society has a small collection, which includes ten years of the early Snowy River Mail on microfilm.

A school, registered No. 3920, opened 1915 and remains open. The complete registers are held at the school. Names on the register, without dates or other identifying details, were published in Township of Cann River Parish of Noorinbee.

There is a war memorial in Genoa Street, near the RSL Hall, for World Wars I and II. For transcripts of the memorial, click HERE.

Canni Creek (between Nowa Nowa and Buchan)
A school, registered No. 3782, opened 1917 and closed 1919. The records have not at this stage been identified, but the only students are believed to have come from the Beecher family.

Cape Conron

Cassilis
The cemetery reserve was gazetted in 1877, records date from 1899-1921 and the earliest headstone is dated 1884. Records and headstones have been transcribed and are held at EGFHG, EGHS, GSV and SAG, and were published in Gippsland Heritage Journal No.8, pp27-28. The cemetery has also been known as Tongio West Cemetery, and references to a Swifts Creek Cemetery on death certificates may refer to this cemetery. A trust has recently been re-formed.

Police Records: The original Cassilis Watchhouse Charge Book is last known to have still been in existence and in use at the Swifts Creek Police Station. Enquiries should be directed to the Victoria Police Historical Unit.

A school, registered No. 3021, opened 1890 and closed 1903. Some details of students were published in Gippsland Heritage Journal No. 15 pp9-10, but no other records have been located.

A school, registered No. 4145, opened 1922 and closed 1928. The records have not at this stage been identified.

Claybank
Railway station in former Shire of Tambo

Clifton Creek
A school, registered No. 3684, opened 1911 and remains open. A private school operated in the area before 1911 and complete registers are held at the existing school.

Club Terrace
A cemetery is believed to have operated in the vicinity of the current Club Terrace rubbish tip, with the last known burial being in the early 1900s. There are no records, no headstones and no gazetted reserve. Burials are believed to have included John (or James) Parker about 1900 and a Mr. Brooker about 1907.

A school, registered No. 3343, opened 1900 and closed around the 1990s. The original registers are held at the PRO.

Cobungra West (north of Omeo)
A school, registered No. 2504, opened 1883 and closed 1886. The records have not at this stage been identified.

Colquhoun
Rural area near Lakes Entrance

Combienbar (north of Club Terrace)
Members of the Orchard, McIntyre and Stewart families are believed to be buried in a private cemetery, with the last burial about 1912. There are no records, headstones or gazetted reserve.

A school, registered No. 3691, opened 1911 and has closed in recent years. Some school records (1963-1966) are held at the PRO: VPRS 6520.

Combienbar Upper (Buldah Lower)
A school, registered No. 4050, opened 1921 and closed c. 940. The records have not at this stage been identified.

A school, registered No. 3452, opened 1903 and closed 1947. The records 1926-1947 are held at EGFHG. Some school records (1925-1947), including the registers, are held at the PRO: VPRS 6505.

Dellicknora (between Delegate River and Tubbutt)
The cemetery reserve was gazetted in 1903 and the earliest headstone is dated 1938. Headstone details were published in East Gippsland Cemeteries. The cemetery is still in use and is administered by a trust.

A school, registered No. 3292, opened 1897 and closed some time after 1970. Extracts from registers for 1892-1933 and a list of known burials held at EGFHG.

Delvine (south of Lindenow)
Soon after their arrival in Gippsland from the Monaro in the 1840s the Scott family established a cemetery on Delvine Station. Records (1846-1918) and headstones were published in East Gippsland Cemeteries and Gippsland Heritage Journal Vol.3 No. 1(No 4) pp43-45. This cemetery is on private property. Enquiries and information regarding burials should be directed to the Scott Family, 15 Rodericks Rd, Wuk Wuk 3966.

A school, registered No. 1696, first opened 1876 and had a varied life. The registers have not at this stage been identified. Some school records (1970-1972) are held at the PRO: VPRS 6385.

A cemetery reserve was gazetted in 1901 at Deptford, but there are no formal records and no headstones. Brief details of seven burials are listed in East Gippsland Cemeteries.

Eagle Point

Glenaladale (near Woodglen)
The earliest burial so far identified for this cemetery took place in 1874 and the earliest headstone is dated 1880, but the cemetery reserve was not gazetted until 1913. The most recent burial identified took place in December 1945. No formal records have been kept. Brief details of burials known at the time of publication appear in East Gippsland Cemeteries, but since this time many more have been identified by Margaret Perry. She can be contacted by writing to P.O. Box 320, Bairnsdale 3875, and would appreciate hearing from any people who have family buried there.

The cemetery, officially known as Mallacoota West Cemetery, in Mirrabooka Rd, Mallacoota, is the one in current use. The reserve was gazetted in 1905, records date from 1952 and the earliest headstone is dated 1913, although there are none between 1916 and 1952. Wairewa (west of Orbost)
A school, registered No. 3739, opened 1912 and closed some years ago. The original registers are held at the PRO.

Wangarabell
A private cemetery exists on the former Wangarabell Station. There are no records and no gazetted reserve. Details of the nine headstones and three known unmarked burials were published in East Gippsland Cemeteries.

Small town near Bruthen.

Wombat / Wombat Creek
A mining area "downhill" from Sunnyside, which had its own post office. Wombat Creek is also an area south of the highway between Nowa Nowa and Orbost.

Woodglen/Woodlands
A school, registered No. 3352, opened 1903 and remains open. The records (date range not stated) held at EGFHG, and a register of pupils who commenced 1900-1993 was published in Our Best Yet: The History of the 'Glen' Schools.

Wuk Wuk
A school, registered No. 2727, opened 1886 and closed 1940. The records 1886-1896 held at EGFHG and EGHS. The school Honour Roll for World War I is held at the EGHS and a transcript is held at EGFHG.
