Agnes
A school, registered no. 3043, opened in 1890 and has closed since 1970. the
school records are available at Foster Museum, and the original school is in the museum
grounds.
Allambee South
A school, registered no. 2825 was opened in 1866 (according to Vision and
Realisation - this is probably a mistake for 1886) and later became known as
Hallston. Another Allambee South school, registered no. 3075, opened in 1891.
Ameys Track
A school, registered no. 3557, opened in 1907 and closed in 1948.
Arawata
A school, registered no. 2970, opened in 1889, originally under the name of
Korumburra.
Ardnee (Dumbalk South)
A school, registered no. 3276, opened in 1896 as Dumbalk South, and closed in 1904. It
reopened in 1921 under the name Ardnee and closed in 1930.
Barry Beach
Bellview (near Poowong?)
A school, registered no. 4243, was opened in 1926 and closed in 1945. Its exact location
is not known, but it is assumed to be in South Gippsland.
Bena
A school, registered no. 3062, opened in 1890.
Bennison
A school, registered no. 3025, opened in 1890 and operated under he name of
Liverpool until 1908. It closed in 1948.
Berrys Creek
A school, registered no. 2925, opened in 1889.
Bonnie Brae
Boolarong
A school, registered no. 3521 opened in 1906 as Woorarra Central and changed its
name to Boolarong, closing in 1944.
Boorool (north-east of Leongatha)
A school, registered no. 4307, opened in 1927 and finally closed in 1951.
Boys (Boyes)
A school, registered no. 3638 opened in 1910 and closed in 1926. Records are
available at the Foster Museum.
Buffalo
A school, registered no. 3240, was opened in 1897 under the name Meeniyan East,
and was still open in 1969.
Burndale
A school, registered no. 4249, opened in 1925 and closed in 1949.

Carmichael
Cliffy Island
This island is part of the Seal Islands, east of Wilsons Promontory, and at this stage it
has not been established if it is in Wellington Shire or South Gippsland Shire, or even
now in Victoria. Its sole inhabitants appear to have been lighthouse keepers.
A school, registered no. 3657, opened, possibly around 1910, and closed a short time after.

Dumbalk
A school, registered no. 3042, opened under the name Dumbalk Central
in 1889 and closed in 1891. A school, registered no. 2945, opened in 1887
under the name of Dumbalk North. Dumbalk East,
registered no. 3172, opened in 1891. Dumbalk South, registered no. 3276,
opened in 1897, closed in 1904 and operated from 1921 to 1930 as Ardnee. Dumbalk,
registered no. 3415, opened in 1902 as Nerrena East and changed its name to Dumbalk in
1938.
Fairbank
A school, registered no. 3171, opened in 1892 and closed in 1939.
Fish Creek
A school, registered no. 3028 opened in 1890. Another school, registered no.
4473, opened in 1930 as Fish Creek West, and closed in 1942.
Foster
(Originally known as Stockyard Creek)

Gold Mines: There were 35 gold mines in the district, details available from the Foster Museum.
Historical Society: South Gippsland Shire Historical Society ( includes the Foster Museum)
Hotels: Within four years of the opening of the Stockyard Creek gold diggings in 1870, there were more than twenty public houses in Foster. These included the Exchange, Bayview, FosterArms, Tarra Arms, Royal Bridge, Terminus, Nugget, Pioneer, Crooked Billet, Stennet & Henry Bennet General Store (licenced), Prospectors, All Nations, West Coast, Eldorado, Union, Sportsmans Arms/Finlays/Royal Mail, Leggatts, Diggers Arms/Varneau and Hartley Arms. Details are available from the Foster Museum.
Lodge: Loyal Foster Lodge No. 7281 Manchester Unity Independant Order of Oddfellows lists names on an Honour Board now installed in the South Gippsland Shire Historical Society Museum in Main Street, Foster.

A school, registered number 3220, opened under the name Hoddle Range in 1895, in
the Koonark township.
Horsleys Estate (near Korumburra)
A school, registered no. 4395, was opened in 1929 and closed in 1948.
Jeetho
A school, registered no. 2690, was opened in 1886 and closed in 1960.
Jeetho East
A school, registered no. 2423, opened in 1881 and closed in 1892
Jeetho West
A school, registered no. 4146, opened in 1924 and closed in 1945.
Johnstones Hill
A school, registered no. 3580 opened in 1908 "17 miles from Yinnar" under the
name of Victoria Hall. It has not been possible to establish the exact location for this
school (which may be in Wellington or La Trobe shires), but it also operated half time
with Livingston, which was somewhere near Gunyah. It closed in 1923 and reopened in 1933
and had various openings and closures until its final closure in 1969.
Jumbunna
A school, registered number 2463, was opened in 1882 under the name Jumbunna, but later
changed to Woodleigh. Another school, registered no. 2954, was opened in 1889 under the
name Moyarra, but appears to have been moved to Jumbunna about 1894.
Kardella
A school, registered no. 3196, opened in 1893 and closed in 1944. A school,
registered no. 3603, opened in 1909 as Kardella South, and closed in 1954.
Kilcunda Road
A school, registered no. 3337, opened 1899, and was still open in 1950.
Kongwak
A school, registered no. 3323, opened in 1899.

Wild Dog Valley (near Mount Eccles)
A school, registered no. 4498, opened in 1932 and closed about 1950. It re-opened
in 1961 and was still operating in 1969.
Wilsons Promontory

A school, registered number 2278, opened in September 1880 at the lighthouse and closed again in December 1880.
Wonga
A school, registered no. 3496, opened in 1905 under the name Wonga Wonga, and
closed in 1944.
Woodleigh - see Jumbunna
Woorarra
A school, registered no. 3410, opened in 1902 under the name Wonyip (which is in
Wellington Shire), and was renamed to Woorarra in 1908. Also referred to at times as Mount
Best, Mount Fatigue and Hazel Park. A school, registered no. 3521 opened in 1906 as
Woorarra Central and changed its name to Boolarong, closing in 1944.

Woorarra West
A school, registered no. 3434, opened in 1902 and closed in 1951.
Wooreen
A school, registered no. 3723, opened in 1912, and was still operating in 1972.
Yanakie
A school, registered no. 4842, opened in 1960 and was still open in 1969. It closed some
date after that, and was moved to the Foster Museum. Records are available at the Foster
