AUS-VIC-GIPPSLAND Mailing List
Centre for Gippsland Studies

The Centre for Gippsland Studies is a library/ archive/ research centre located at the Gippsland campus of Monash University at Churchill. It endeavours to collect all published material on Gippsland, as well as maintaining extensive manuscript and photographic holdings. The Centre deeply appreciates and values published histories of Gippsland families which are donated to its collection.

The Centre is open to the public and personal visitors are welcome Monday to Wednesday, from 9am to 5pm. It may be advisable to telephone ahead, on (03) 5122 6356 to ascertain if staff will be available, as they are often engaged in meetings and other enquiries. As a rule the Centre does not carry out research on families for individuals and the nature of their works means it is inappropriate for people to ring expecting to do research over the telephone.

To access the collection you do need to have some idea of what you are looking for, as the collection is held in an archival situation and you do need to request specific items. Although the friendly and cooperative staff will attempt to respond to requests such as 'anything on Maffra', this scattergun approach may not be the best way to utilise your time there.

The Centre publishes a list of its holdings, GIPPSDOC, which is described in
How to Find Books. It also publishes a quarterly newsletter, Gippsland Roundup, which gives news of research and notification of events and advice of new publications. At this stage it is a free newsletter and requests to be added to the mailing list should be sent to: The Director, Centre for Gippsland Studies, Monash University, Churchill 3842.
