Gippsland Heritage Journal began publication in 1986 and is currently produced on an irregular basis. The journal includes a wide range of articles for a diverse readership, and many of them are useful for family historians, including articles on the development of towns in Gippsland, buildings, organisations, events, industries, biographies, shipwrecks and cemetery lists. It is owned, published, edited, sometimes written and usually even collated by three historians with strong links to local and family history. It is totally funded from its sales and supported by Kapana Press. At the time of writing the issues from the first four years are out of print, but can be found in many libraries.
An index is produced every five issues, with ever second index being a consolidated index. Therefore at the moment the indexes available are 1-10 and 11-15. The next to be published will be the 11-20 index. The index is by subject, place name and surname. There are separate listings for articles, books reviewed and noted, and maps.
Gippsland Heritage Journal has, since its inception, endeavoured to review or note all books on Gippsland as they are published. Where possible it also includes details of price and source.
The journal also publishes free 'Information Sought' items for families who were in Gippsland.
Outside Gippsland full sets of the Journal can be found at the GSV, AIGS, SAG, State Library of Victoria and National Library. In Gippsland, it is held in all libraries in the Wellington Library Service, in the local collection in the Bairnsdale Library, at the East Gippsland Family History Group, the Yarram Genealogy Group and the Centre for Gippsland Studies. West Gippsland and Latrobe Shire libraries also hold sets.
It is available by subscription from P.O. Box 420, Maffra 3860. The current subscription rate is $16 for two issues.
